Hello wonderful people of Dakka. You've all been incredibly supportive as I bounced between my two great loves, space elf nonsense and loyalist with chain axes (I decided on the sharks). I decided I'm going to use kill team to test the waters after reading through many rulebooks (thanks to the internet). I've heard alot of rumors around 8th edition being either the End Times or just a streamlining of the rules,so should a new player wait to into 40k proper till 8th edition?

I think if you stick with basic and classic units such as tacticals, terminators, land speeders, predators (for marines) without building up your colection too heavily around a specific list you should be ok.

Based on what the more reliable rumormongers have said, I highly doubt 8th edition is going invalidate anything major. It's mostly going to be a simplification and consolidation, so anything you buy now should still work in 8th edition. Starting out with Kill Team is still not a bad idea, though.

Get familiarized with the game, but if you want deals wait until eighth drops and people panic sell their models.

The correct answer to this is: do you like your models?
If you chose an army based on simply liking the way they look/act/appear...start painting and don't worry about the game. This is honestly the best way to approach Warhammer on your own terms. If you like your story/models, everything else is secondary. If you like the army and models you can find someone to game with who has a similar attitude and nothing becomes irrelevant. Heck, if 8th is a huge pile of crap you can play 7th with them anyway, or ditch Warhammer altogether and play a different game - as long as you like your models/army.
If you bought your army based on units/meta/power/competition/tournaments...no one can tell you what to do. A lot of people glue stuff together and run it (unpainted, etc.) until the wind shifts and something else becomes potent/amazing/powerful.

No of course not. We don't even know if 8th is the same game or when it drops. If you like to buy, paint annd play with toys do it now. Don't wait for whatever might happen in half a year. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just dont invest too heavily into one unit type, trick or style of play. Edition shifts tend to shift the balance in a codex a bit so it could just be that a few of your units become not as good or even next to worthless. Having a balanced army mitigates this, but spamming one unit is kinda risky.,

Wait until 8th, unless you really love building and painting the models. 7th edition is a barely-playable mess, unless you're a true masochist you're probably not going to want to play much of it. So you might as well wait and see if 8th edition is going to make the game better and worth playing, or kill it off entirely.

Must play Tau or Eldar. This edition is garbage. Ask a Chaos player and they'll say 3.5 was the best. Ask an Ork player and they'll say 5th was the best.
It's all a matter of opinion.

I'm waiting for 8th. Painting a GSC Cult army in preparation and if I want to game with them before 8th arrives I can play DW:OK (or some Inq28 style games as I am an old school player).
It's not a problem with having to learn the rules. The barrier for entry to me is the cost of the rulebooks and codexes, especially if they are going to be out of date in 6-8months time.
If 40k is going to have any sort of significant streamlining, the codexes will all have to be invalidated - there's no two ways about that in my opinion. (Formations need points costs like AoS battalions for starters.)
I would say build and paint your army in preparation and play any other games you like in the meantime (why not try AoS to tide you over? To play narratively the rules are all free and to play competitively you need only the £15 GHB and perhaps one of the GA books for battalions (£10 or £20).

I'd say yes you've no clue how units you buy now will work in 8th and may have to totally rebuild your army.
Also not knowing if it'll be any Goodman see you buying in as the game implodes.

8th edition is a completely undefined amount of time away and will change the game in a completely undefined way... or maybe not at all!
It is highly unlikely that any of your models from any faction will be completely killed off. For a number of reasons I think even if a 40k 'end times' does come, the changes to armies are going to be significantly less than they were to WHFB. So if you're worried about what you buy now being not in the next edition of 40k - don't.
If you're worried about what you buy now not being powerful in the next edition of 40k... the meta shifts with every new codex, regardless of if its your faction or not. Whatever counted as good armies were completely demolished when 7E eldar arrived. Buy what you want to play with now, and change it if you want or need to later on.

1) Kill team is an OK way to start, but GW put 0 effort into it, so it has limited replayability. Thankfully Heralds of Ruin have developed a better version of Kill Team: http://heralds-of-ruin.blogspot.com/p/kill-team-rules.html
The other option is Combat Patrol. 400 Points, 1 special detachment:
0-1 HQ
0-1 Elite
1-3 Troops
0-1 Fast
0-1 Heavy
Vehicles have a max combined armor facing of 33, Models have a max save of 3+, and a max invul of 4++. Maximum of 6 warp dice.
It actually works surprisingly well because it avoids the Formations, Super Heavies, and psychic exploits that are the root of most of the issues with the modern 40K meta.
2) We don't know when 8th edition will come out, and having some models painted and ready to go when it comes out would make it easier to get started, so getting started now is probably a pretty good thing.
3) All factions and Units will definitely still be playable in 8th edition. Hover the balance of what is good may change. So when starting your collection it would be a really good idea to diversify.
Let me give you a specific example. Eldar Scatter Laser Jetbikes are a super-duper good unit right now. They have more firepower, speed, and scoring ability than basically any other unit in the game. However, they work because Jetbikes have relentless. If 8th edition comes out, and bikes are no longer relentless, then they wouldn't be the uber choice that they currently are, and if you buy 60 of them now you might regret it.
So maybe start with 1 or 2 boxes of anything. That way when the new edition comes out you will have the variety to play in it without have too many models likely to collect dust on your shelf.

40K has not an edition that caused mass invalidation since 3rd edition.
40K has not had an edition with as many active codex/army choices as 7th edition has.
Every edition has some meta shifting changes about what will be good that edition (vehicles, assault, flyers, psychic powers, etc..)
Every edition so far, has a new Space Marines Codex that was better than the last.
My belief is that 8th edition will be an attempt to improve the rules, but won't invalidate existing codex.

Get into it. I would not buy any rules though, they will be invalidated with 8th and they are... not great anyway.
As everyone says, if you buy the bread and butter of a popular faction your models will still be playable. If your army hinges on a few particular rules and the rules change then... that's what you get.
Judging by the model cuts for fantasy; avoid factions that GW has negglected for a long time and any resin or metal models.

If you are going to buy into the game right now - use eBay. Buy the rules and models second hand, because things will be changing in about a year. Make sure you are okay with the changes first, because they won't change again for a long while.

We do not know when 8th will hit, and you'll be waiting for the re-done codexes for months after it drops before any huge overhaul will ruin an army.
Some rules will change how your army plays (assault, grenades, wound allocation, hull points), but the units will probably work in a similar way to how they do in 7th.
Even after 8th arrives, you don't have to play using it until new stuff turns up that requires it (like fliers and superheavies in 6th/7th).
Get the core units and play 7th. 8th cannot be that much of a change....

If 8th isn't much of a change there really is no point buying in because 7th sucks and has driven tons of people.
8th needs to be a major overhaul if 40k is to have a future, it can't carry on in the same manner.

So much crying.
7th is fine as long as you are able to have a sensible discussion with your opponents about what level of competition you are playing at. 40K was never designed to be a watertight tournament-level game. It's a game. Play it, have fun, move on when you get crushed by a OP list.
They tightened up the rulebook considerably over 6th. Still a long (long) way to go, which is what I am hoping for in 8th... no major changes but some streamlining (too many USR's) and wording tightened up, allies matrix changed and the psychic powers rebalanced (change invis to 5+ for example).
I would get a softback 7th ed rulebook and some minis from ebay. Do a little reading first to make sure you're buying an army at a power level you're comfortable with. It's likely some rebalancing will occur (as I believe GW are now listening, vaguely, to complaints from the community and seem to be giving us - generally - what we are asking for).
Above all, have fun with your toy soldiers

Then how come space marines dark angels and demons are doing better in tournaments than tau with necrons being about as high placing, and space puppers and knights being close behind. Also genestealer cult is looking to be one nasty counter to tau.

intuit it. Give nthe codex's still to be released ( and far more substantively rumored to be coming than 8th).
Look at the schedule of releases and ask youself: is there a point to a new edition this close to so many codex drops? That would seem... Unlikely to me. The giveaway wuill be when you see a Grey Knight phenomenon and a codex suddenly appears with all kinds of mentions of new rules or seems "not built for this edition" as the Grey Knights were not built for the 6th Edition. They came out and people were like WTF, but it only lasted the few months before the new edition arrived and then everyone was like "okay that makes way more sense".
Until a codex kind of does that and until the release schedule gets a little lead time, it makes no sense to then drop an 8th edition right after them.
So I do not think that anything will happen until 2018 or the extreme end (it being Christmas and all) of 2017. We have plenty of time to enjoy our toys until then.
new editions also dont invalidate most of the truly core stuff in most armies anyways and we are still playing with 1986 models in our armies so I just think there's little if any reason to panic in the next 12 months.
