I have been toying with a few lists for my Horus Heresy Luna Wolves army. It is centered around Loken and his Luna Wolves prior to the change to be the Sons of Horus. Of course, I will be playing against all other legions and armies as if it was the Heresy, but thematically, I am going for a Luna Wolves themed army. They are done up in the white color scheme and everything. They have the MkIV armor from Calth which isn't perfectly fluffy, but I can' afford tons of FW stuff.

So my question is: Are Justaerin terminators justifiable fluff-wise for an Ullanor / Pre-Heresy Luna Wolves list focusing on Loken? I really love their new rules and models. However, I know they are led by Abaddon, a sworn rival of Loken during the Heresy. Would it be weird thematically to have a unit of Justaerin in the army? I already have a unit of regular terminators in the army list. Is it a weird contrast to have regular termies alongside Justaerin?

Also, would painting them black be appropriate or should I paint them white like the Luna Wolves colors to match the other terminators. If I recall correctly, Justaerin are a "special" class of terminator and always have the black paint scheme. Just curious and looking for answers. Thanks!

First off mark 4 is still fluffy because remember they were the legion of Horus, they got the new toys first.

I would say paint your Justaerin the way you want. I tried the black and I was not a fan of it myself so I am planning on stripping and repainting them.

Loken and Abaddon were not always rivals. Prior to the Heresy they were close and both part of the Mourneval (Horus's closest group of confidants).

Having Justaerin is totally fine in any Sons of Horus/ Luna Wolves army.

If you read the first book from the Horus Heresy series, Loken is fighting a battle along side some Justaerin and even remarks on their Black Armour.

Also note, that if you don't want to take Justaerin you could always take a Terminator equipped Command Squad.

Nothing wrong with either MkIV or Justaerin:
MkIV's adoption was nowhere near complete when the Heresy erupted but it's implementation had been under way for years, in Horus Rising it was regarded as ubiquitous for both the Luna Wolves *and* the Emperor's Children (when the latter find a MkIII eyepiece they know it has to come from a Blood Angel, because the EC contingent doesn't have any MkIII).

As for Justaerin: Abaddon offers Loken some Justaerin in Horus Rising, Loken politely declines but there's no reason to suppose he might not have accepted a similar offer in different circumstances in the past.

Also IIRC there's not much actual detail given on the tenth companies Terminator squad, so you could always use Justaerin models (painted white) & rules to represent it saying it's based on the Justaerin's doctrines and equipment (ala the Reaver Squads, which can be used to represent the first companies Catulan as well as similar wannabe squads from other companies).

Yeah, the Reavers are like "pre-heresy equivalent" haha.

Sounds good! I won't feel bad using Justaerin alongside regular terminators then! As for paint, I'll keep them black to be able to distinguish. Plus it's easier to paint than white

You could have mid heresy Luna wolves. I'm pretty sure Loken and his followers went back to white.

Well...they were stuck on the surface of istavan 3 so it would've been impossible for them to revert to their white plate. But yes they re-adopted the title of Luna Wolves

Wouldn't have been impossible.... Just scrape off the black paint. Not that they would have had time.....
