Hi all.
As meantioned in the heading, playing a Tau army that is using forge world Riptides with AP2 Flamers onboard.
My tactics with this list is the Chaplin with the VV's, and the Librarian with either the Tactical squad or the Devistator squad in the rhinos mid-table. Was going to have him in terminator armor and deep strike but I miss a turn of physic powers.
Tactics are dreadnoughts central table attracting fire and hopefully being in a position to charge the riptides. scouts behind not moving (check race guard tactics, the 10man dev squad combat squaded also. The predator on one side, the lascannon/ML/sargent(signim) and cherub combat squad and the other 2 ML on the other side.
On one flank the VV'/ and Chaplin and the devistator squad with the 2 plasma cannons in their rhino.Other flank assault marines and the rhino with tacticals/Libby.
Terminators deep strike into the tau lines turn2.
With this I see that I would have angles on most places on the battlefield to hit the riptides before they can do too much damage (famous last words), with 7 lascannon shots a turn, 2 plasma cannon shots and 3 missile launchers shots, and then the VV'/ and AM going up the flanks hopefully into the tau lines wth the terms coming in ontop.

The raven guard tactics I think support this, with the first turn shrouded and the jump packs in both phases.

The Libby will be rolling on demonology, the first lot. Can't remember name of the top of my head!

I've never played tau before so please help! Apparently these Flamers do some serious damage that's why I am trying to spread all my forces out.

So a bunch of stuff. As a tau player I can say honestly this list wouldn't scare me. Especially if I'm fielding 2 yvarha battle suits. They have two guns one a 6" torrent s6 ap2 flamer that can shoot twice but gains gets hot. The other gun is no slouch either though, s7 ap3 and between 3-6 shots. Oh and it has haywire. With early warning override they will melt through marines. You are right to be scared. I assume he'll bring a storm surge or a tunar in the lord of war slot as well so yea, lots of deadly dakka.

So for the yvarhas I would say Grav is the best bet to deal with them. Or if you get super lucky assault. They only have 4 wounds so like most tau stuff they are glass cannons. Focus them and you should be way better off.

I honestly think your list needs a rework. I would go with different chapter tactics. Most space marine deathstars not surprisingly use bikes because they are fast and tough, but not really for tau with our easy access to ignores cover and low ap weapons. But saturation of targets through say a gladius or just multiple fast threats will be a challenge for tau. Do NOT try to outshoot the tau or trade salvos with them, the only race that can really tank tau level shooting is necrons.

Firstly, don't play ravenguard in a CAD, most ravenguard stuff is terrible on it's own. You need the talonblade to succeed. That said, dreadnoughts, predators, baseline assault squads, vanguard vets, plasma cannons, missle launchers, and terminators are all pretty bad. Some can work in the right formations but without some kind of other special rules those things are all really subpar.

Second, this list is SUPER illegal. You can't take more than one relic per character and you certainly can't take a relic more than once.

Slight change of tack. Salamanders chapter gives me 4+ FNP against Flamers on the big tau guys, and have broken the 3 dreads up into different squads so can't all be targeted at once.

Let me know!

Rolling on demonology santic powers for the Libby, twice, if I get Gate of Infinity I'll place the terms on the battlefield with the Libby turn on and deep strike turn one into the tau backfield.

If I don't get that power, the Libby will deepstrike with the terms start of turn 2.

I tried to make a GSF but simply didn't have enough models!
Sitting spare from this I have 3 PC, 5 scouts, 5 tacticals and a captain.
I have no more tanks.

Aiming to have the assault marines and VV on opposite sides of the board, the three tanks wide across the field in whatever cover they can find, and the dreads widely spaced up the middle.
Preditor and devistators/stern guard Spread out across my backboard to gain angles and also to help prevent the flames wiping me out.

Arm VV with PF/LC combo
or SS + power-axe or SS+ power-maul.

Take them with talon strike force and in the deathstrike kill team formation. This gives you automatic first turn assault vs practically anything in your enemies army. This is typically good but tau with all their interceptor can counter it. Still though this is probably the best way to kill a riptide - he will cry when you pull it off.

The rest I will let you figure out for yourself. It wont take you long to figure out what units not to bring against tau.
