Say a chaos warband captures a bunch of navigators, would they have any use for them besides as sacrifices? It would make for a fun opportunity for grimdark and the CSMs try to capture/breed a navigator force.

They do whatever they want because they don't have any rules to follow.

In the night lords trilogy, that is how they replace their navigators.

There are many different ways that chaos forces can both navigate the warp and make use of navigators.

To the former, some warbands have sorcerers or possessed who can find their way through the warp. Some band with one of the fallen or renegade navigator houses, who have learned how to use the Eye of Terror similar to the Astronomicon. Some don't navigate directly at all and instead use the strength of their beliefs and their unbreakable faith in their patron gods to guide them.

To the latter, some warbands may try to breed their own navigators, stripping them down to only the essential components. Or they might remove their third eyes to be used in various profane rituals. Or they might just random them off to a different faction that has more of an interest in them.

CSM are not reliant on navigators.

Possessed, sourcers or others of a certain level of power can navigate warp. It ain't such a issue for chaos

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

Because I read it the other day and took note, on page 399 of the Night Lords Omnibus, it's mentioned Navigators are preferable to Sorcerers as Navigators.

They need them to navigate their space ships from point A to point B. This is discussed in the Night Lords trilogy, as JamesY mentioned.

They are highly sought after and valuable prizes when they can be captured.

Navigators have a lot of different uses in the fleets of Chaos, and (as mentioned) the Night Lords Talos Trilogy actually has one mainstage. They are used in various ways by all the forces of Chaos for a wide assortment of things, from navigating the tides of the warp more smoothly for ships, to being used to stir the Warp to hinder pursuit. They are by no means the only method of navigation.
Sorcerers can force a ship through the warp with magic, certain possesed SM can navigate the Warp as well, and in some cases Daemonships can navigate themselves. There are also methods for those sworn to the Four who can use Warp Rifts to travel, as well as much rarer artificially built portals that can move things planet to planet and system to system.
That said, navigators are rare and cherished, as they also eliminate many of the dangers of warp travel.

Yes, absolutely.

The nightlords series kind of dives into this topic by making the distinction between how CSM sorcerers can navigate the warp compared to a true Navigator. CSM's can function as navigators, but don't do it very well, get burnt out easily, and generally aren't very good at it whereas a true navigator is literally genetically engineered to guide ships through the warp.

Something ive always found lacking in the 40k Fluff is how difficult of a time that the CSM's should have acquiring and maintaining a navigator corp. They Mutate and are very susceptible to possession.
