Really having a hard time finding models, or information on how to "create" them.

I have been playing a modest SM list and adding to it quite a bit. Every now and then I come across a unit I cant seem to find.

A couple examples-

1. A plastic Techmarine. I was able to find a static resin one, and another resin one with servitors. By the description, I cant tell if you can build with options. I like options.

2. A Captain and a Command Squad on bikes. Bikes that I found come with 3 basic SM bikers. So would I need to buy the bikes, a Command Squad, and use the parts from both? Will that even work?

3. A Dreadnought with Autocannons. They can use it, but I cant seem to find one without going buying a resin one from FW. Again, not a fan of resin.

I just find it silly that options in a codex are not available to the units, or need to be purchased with different kits and bashed. Is there a reason for it or am I just dense?

1. There's no plastic Techmarine. There used to be more models (metal ones) but they've retired those.

2. There are HQs on bikes (https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Space-Marine-White-Scars-Commander, for example) but most people do kit-bash them.

3. Yep, that's a FW option. People convert them using the quad-gun from Aegis Defence Line.

Probably worth pointing out that GW & FW resin are different, with FW being superior.

1. You might be able to steal parts from skitarii/admech for help with the techmarine. There is a good shoulder pad to use on the vehicle accessory sprue. I used an old loading arm from a ML backpack to make my tech on bike. Might not be a true servo arm, but it gets the point across.

2. That’s how most bike HQs work. Get a box of bikes, some cool looking bits, shake them together. It might be worth looking into some of the DA kits for special looking bike parts. I know I dipped pretty heavy into the ravenwing sprue when making my bike captain and librarian.

3. I cobbed some together from the ADL quadgun. Other option would be to scavenge some parts from the guard, or other places.

Thanks for the replies, and the ideas.

I really hate the thought of buying full boxes for a few parts.

Why do they not make weapon sprues, and other upgrades? It makes no sense. I dont mean for something crazy, but stuff right out of the codex....

I just found out to get a Las cannon, or Heavy Bolter for a Tac squad I need to buy a Devastator box. Also find it odd that the standard gear for my Dread is a Multi....which does NOT come in the box.

Color me confused and frustrated....

If you think GW is expensive now, think of how bad it would be if they had all the options in every box. Everyone would need an extra sprue or two!

One thing to do is head down to your FLGS and see if any of the guys have stuff to trade. Odds are, in a dusty bitz-box, there is the part you need, unwanted and unloved.

The Dev box is not a bad purchase overall. It comes with a ton of extra heavy weapons. You can either build the extras useing some spare bodies, or trade them for other guns more useful to you.

You can also check out bits sellers online, e-bay, or 3rd party manufacturers who makes some very nice counts-as.

Thanks Nevelon!

The only bitz box I know in town is a huge cardboard box sitting in a store I dont go to that is about 2 feet deep. As much as I am sure I COULD find what I need, the time needed to sort it through it is too great. Not only that the prices for the bits are pretty dumb.

I saw a bits online shop here in the US but shipping is $14.25. Which is again not worth it.

Ill suck it up and buy a few more boxes. See what I can come up with.

Personally I love bits... like a lot.

I find it incredibly difficult to purchase a kit for just bits, however, overtime, as you expand your army, you acquire bits. I was able to equip an entire unit of Kabalite warriors with extra bits I had, it is really fun once you have the inventory.

That being said, if you haven't gotten to that point yet, going to ebay and looking for the bits you need and hoping you can get them for decent prices, and there are tons of swap shops on dakka that are very easy to use to trade bits with other people.

Hope this helps!

I was mostly referring to the bits-boxes of your fellow hobbyists. You’d be surprised what people have kicking around and would be willing to part with. One man’s trash is another’s treasure.

It might be worth organizing a swap session at the FLGS. Get a bunch of people to bring all their extra junk, and trade.
