Normally play nids, but wanted to get some Ad Mech and Knights. Planning on getting the models, but would like to know how bad my planned list is, and get a better list before I buy a new army.

Are you into somewhat cheesy and arguably overpowered formations? In particular ones that allow you to take hundreds of points worth of upgrades for free? Well have a look at the War Convocation! You're nearly there anyway, to be honest. All you'd need to add is a unit of Sydonian Dragoons or Ironstrider Ballistarii, which might well be paid for in the points you'd save on upgrades. You're so close, I'm actually wondering if this whole post is a trap.



I don't know how it plays, but it sounds pretty nasty. It depends whether you want to be the guy who brings the formation that some people consider overpowered. I've never played Skitarii, but they would be the army I would build if I had the cash. Amazing but expensive models.

Edit - here's what a Skitarii Battle Maniple consists of:

FORMATION:
1 unit of Skitarii Vanguard
1 unit of Skitarii Rangers
1 unit of Sicarian Ruststalkers
1 unit of Sicarian Infiltrators
1 unit of Sydonian Dragoons or 1 unit of Ironstrider Ballistarii
1 unit of Onager Dunecrawlers
RESTRICTIONS:
None.

A Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregation detatchment is basically a CAD, so your HQ, two (bloody expensive) Kataphron troops, and you could add your robot maniple as heavy support, I think.

Thank you for replying... I can't believe I forgot about Ironstriders/Dragoons. Thanks for the suggested formation.

Edit: I don't really care about the details of the army as long as it's fun to play and paint.

It is fun to paint and looks great, but you should know that War Convocation is the most complicated army to play. With all the free wargear, each unit has a dozen special rules, some of which change each turn. Big commitment.

You're going to want at least 3 dragoons. They are so much fun to play and look great painted up.Destroyers over breachers are the way to go. I do like the breachers but the destroyers are better over all. Perhaps one of each would be a better fit for you.

The War convo is the way to go if you are going your route as it fills everything you are looking for and it is amazingly powerful. You can fit a ton more units in the list and load up on all the cool ad mech tools and relics. Lots of fun to paint and play. Just finished one myself.

Are Dragoons or Ironstriders better.

Dragoons by a mile but you need units of 3 of more to ensure you hit your target. In the war convo and first turn you can get a 2+ cover save with them (shroud psalm). They hit hard.
