So I was in a game with a necron team-mate who had a nightbringer. The other team struggled so much (friendly game - few power units) with it I have started preemptively thinking of ways to take it down for future (with what I have - I know some are cheesy but ill list them all for completions sake). I was wondering if I anyone could come up with something better from orks, SM or tau, but don't limit your answers to those 3!
Lots of poison/melta/plasma - sternguard
Large ork blob with klaws
Callidus assassin
Psychic shriek spam - conclave?
R'varna
Missilesides
And of course the obligatory relentless grav platforms

I've killed a Nightbringer with 7 Sternguard in a single turn. 2+ poison is a nasty thing against an MC with a 4+ save.

It’s been a long time since I faced one (3rd edition) But IIRC he’s high toughness with just a 4++ to protect him. At the time I dropped him with sniper scouts (which was hilarious, by the way). These days sternguard with poison ammo seems the easy fix. Not hard to spam wounds on him on a 2+, and he’s going to take half of them.

It’s not really list tailoring, because sternguard are an answer to so many of life’s problems.

Yeah, no doubt if he's all by his lonesome he's not so bad if you have anything with a decent amount of poison lying about. Doesn't death watch run around with the some interesting ammo these days?

For your buddy though he ought to consider the following:
Add in the conclave of the burning one +solar staff on one cryptek +veil of darkness on the other. Hide them somewhere out of LOS, veil into your lines and pop the solar staff. So now you can only snap fire at the unit this turn and he'll give your sternguard the death gaze thing and kill them all. If you decide to deal with the conclave anyway that just guarantees my wraiths will be in your grill turn 2 at/near full strength. It's an expensive unit to be sure but it screams "Look at me!" when he shows up

Honestly, ignoring it is a good idea because it is just so random its not a huge threat.

However, if you gotta end it, spam it with poison. As DE I wouldn't have an issue, and as Space Wolves a unit of three thunderwolf calvary will destroy it in one round of combat, its happened twice so far!

Probably sternguard in a pod will solve any issue you face, so definitely go with them!

Alas, the FAQ says you have to use the Transcendent. I'll miss my Nightbringer Conclaves.... It was a fun T8 8 wound blob.

Sadly, you cant mix up relics either so getting the conclave with veil, shackles and solar staff was so hard its not worth it

TL;DR- what made the Nightbringer good is no longer possible thanks to FAQ so you probably won't have to worry about facing one unless it's just for fun... in which case, poison.

Deceiver and Nightbringer shards are no longer allowed in the Conclave Formation. Draft FAQ though, could change if they ever release the final versions.

A squad of 10 Warp Spiders ate 2 C'Tan in two turns a few months ago.

Basically you need volume of fire.

Helfrost weapons are another one.
