Given the direction of the discussion in the US politics thread, I wanted to discuss this specific topic without it getting lost in the multi-quote chains. Also, this thread isn't about politics but about famous people an their statements about leaving the USA.

Every election cycle there are those who claim they're intent on leaving the USA should candidate xyz win. Every election cycle this never happens. This year was no different.

Melanie Zanona wrote:Dozens of celebrities vowed to leave the country if Donald Trump won the White House, saying they’d flee to everywhere from Canada to Jupiter.

The threat is a common one after any election outcome: Canada’s immigration website crashed from heavy traffic as it looked increasingly likely that Trump would win.

But after the real estate mogul clinched the presidency in a stunning victory early Wednesday morning, some of those stars will face questions about making good on their promise.

Here is a list of some of the celebs who claimed they would move out of the U.S. under a Trump administration.

Actors

Bryan Cranston said he hopes he doesn’t have to pack his bags, but would “definitely move” if Trump won. “Absolutely, I would definitely move,” the “Breaking Bad” star said on “The Bestseller Experiment” podcast. “It’s not real to me that that would happen. I hope to God it won’t.”

Samuel L. Jackson slammed Trump for running a “hate”-filled campaign and said he would move to South Africa if he wins. “If that language becomes president, I’m moving my black ass to South Africa,” the movie star quipped to Jimmy Kimmel.

Lena Dunham told Andy Cohen at the Matrix Awards that “I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will. I know a lovely place in Vancouver.” The star and creator of HBO’s “Girls” has been a vocal advocate for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee.

Neve Campbell, an actress on the political drama “House of Cards,” vowed to move back home to Canada, while “Orange is the New Black” actress Natasha Lyonne said she would hightail it to a mental hospital.

Singers

Cher tweeted this summer that if Trump gets elected, “I’m moving to Jupiter.”

Miley Cyrus wrote in an emotional Instagram post in March that tears were running down her cheek and she was unbelievably scared and sad. “I am moving if he is president,” the young pop star said. “I don’t say things I don’t mean!”

Barbara Streisand, a vocal Clinton supporter, told “60 Minutes” that “I’m either coming to your country if you’ll let me in, or Canada.”

Ne-Yo told TMZ last month that he’d move to Canada and be neighbors with fellow R&B singer Drake if the country elected Trump.

Comedians

Comedian Amy Schumer said in September that Spain would be her destination of choice.

“My act will change because I will need to learn to speak Spanish,” Schumer said in an appearance on the BBC’s “Newsnight.” “Because I will move to Spain or somewhere. It’s beyond my comprehension if Trump won. It’s just too crazy.”

Chelsea Handler said she already made contingency plans months ago.

“I did buy a house in another country just in case,” the comedian and talk show host said during an appearance on “Live with Kelly and Michael” in May. “So all these people that threaten to leave the country and then don’t — I actually will leave that country.”

Former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart said he would consider “getting in a rocket and going to another planet, because clearly this planet’s gone bonkers” if the real estate mogul wins.

Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of the “The View”, said on an episode of the talk show earlier this year that if the country elects Trump, “maybe it’s time for me to move, you know. I can afford to go.”

Keegan-Michael Key said he would flee north to Canada. “It’s like, 10 minutes from Detroit,” the comedian told TMZ in January. “That’s where I’m from; my mom lives there. It’d make her happy too.”

Hispanic comedian George Lopez said Trump “won’t have to worry about immigration” if he takes the White House because “we’ll all go back.”

Political Figures

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joked in an interview with The New York Times in July that it’d be time to move to New Zealand if Trump were to win.

“Now it’s time for us to move to New Zealand,” she said quoting her husband who died in 2010. “I can’t imagine what the country would be with Donald Trump as our president. For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that.”

Ginsburg later apologized for her comments, calling them “ill-advised.”

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton told a reporter earlier this year that he’s “reserving my ticket out of here if [Trump] wins.”

Is there anyone famous that this list missed? Which do you think are sincere and will actually move? I'd like to use this topic as a tracker, should anyone actually go through with their threat (or pledge or whatever)? Is there anyone on this list you would root for to leave? Anyone who's leaving would break your heart? It seems like several are Canadians so I don't know if it's really much of a threat to say you're just going back home.

What about you guys on Dakka? Are any of you actually going to leave the US because of this? Where do you plan on moving to? Are going to be an immigrant there or just an ex-pat living on a bar stool, drinking yourself into oblivion? (that's what ex-pats do, isn't it?)

There's an error in that list: Amy Schumer has been erroneously listed under "Comedians".

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I feel sorry for Canada.

I will be surprised if any actually moved. It's not like Gary Lineker who actually presented Match of the Day in his pants because Leicester won the PL.

So the shocking thing here is that, during a political campaign, someone said something over the top, and probably won't back it up?

And add into that the "Hollywood Factor" too?

Yeah, move along folks, nothing to see here...

One thing that I'm thinking about with all this. - A fair few actors might actually follow through with it.

Just simply because they already work in Canada anyway. Potentially (albeit not likely), this could be a major gain for Vancouver...

Well, Vancouver already has a large production infrastructure so that wouldn't be a problem. The only issue is, could a non-actor find gainful employment once they leave? Not all of the people on that list are right enough to live and retire early on what they have in savings. Then there is the issue of what the other country's labor laws are. Not every country has an H1b visa program and most would rather Americans not come in taking work that should be going to their own people.

Indeed. Americans are very efficient at eating bacon. Amy Schumer could probably destroy Ontario's defenses by herself.

I'll make an attempt at bringing some serious replies to a "herp derp stupid liberal celebrities herp derp" thread:

For me, moving out of the country is always an option. Although I would probably fall into the "moving back home" category of folks. I have dual citizenship, my two daughters have dual citizenship, and I previously lived in Germany until I was 16. I have family living over there, I could move my family in with my brother if needed, and we would have a good support system there to get started. I wouldn't really have to do that much planning, just buy 4 airline tickets, pack our stuff, and away we go.

Now, the problem for me would be the act of transferring my education and professional license to Germany. You start sucking at speaking your native language when you haven't lived there for 17 years, and in addition to that I was 16 when I moved so I never had any reason to learn the professional terminology that I would have to use in my job. My profession is also less "glamorous" there than it is here, and it pays considerably less. On top of that there is the mountain of German bureaucracy that would take forever to renew my German documentation, get it for my children, get benefits started after we first get there, etc etc etc. Again, we would have a good support system to get us started, and we would have family more than tickled to have us move there. Another problem for me would be that my wife is mixed race and she could easily be mistaken for middle eastern just because she is the right shade of brown, and with the current climate against immigrants that would be something we would have to seriously consider if we were to think about moving. Would it be worth the potential hassle and danger to her? We would also be sacrificing some significant standard of living, at least for the near term. We talk about moving every couple of years and I would like to be back for at least a couple of years, and my wife enjoys the time we have spend there on vacations. So it's always an option if needed.

Now why would we move, aside from a standard "let's move to Germany for a couple of years just because we can" move and talking about more of a "let's get the hell out of this country" move? It would depend on two things, neither of which would include "somebody I don't like became president".

The first would be the safety of my family: My wife is mixed but looks black, and my children are mixed as well although significantly lighter skinned. The worry for me is not that Trump is a racist who is going to strike out against non-whites. My worry is that his pandering to open racists, such as the KKK and alt-right, gave them a boost in recognition and an air of legitimacy. I'm worried that it will be more socially acceptable to be racist, and that my family might suffer because of it. I'm also worried about a GOP that is controlling all three branches is going to implement policies that will negatively affect my family now and for decades to come, although that also falls more to the second factor.

And the second factor would be the welfare of my family: we live in Oklahoma which has managed to just screw up public welfare at any level over the past decade. Education: gak. Public health: gak. Spending on infrastructure: gak. Environmental protection: gak. Increase the frequency and severity of earthquakes: hell yeah we managed to get that accomplished. But I worry about the opportunities and possibilities for my children in this state. I worry about the education they will receive and if it will keep them from being able to compete in the future. I worry about the infrastructure they will inherit, the state of the environment, and their daily interactions in a multicultural world that is resisting multiculturalism.

The good news is that my job gives me the opportunity to move to other areas of the US, likely at the expense of the US Government, so we have many avenues we could pursue to find an environment that would be better for my family if we needed to. But if we needed to, we could also move out of this country.

I wouldn't do it because Trump, or anybody else I don't like is President, but if I had to make a decision based on the physical welfare of my family and the opportunity to create a better future for them it would be something we would seriously consider.

I don't begrudge anyone for making a decision to move out of country for substantive reasons such as job opportunity, family concerns, or even a simple desire to be in country xyz. I believe I've said somewhere in these forums that I am considering heading to foreign shores for retirement because the cost of living is going crazy high here in Washington State. What I do take issue with are people who make vacuous threats over something like Trump/Clinton/Bush/Whoever getting elected. Had Hillary won, I wouldn't have liked it but I would never leave because of it. And I'd like to think I'd still have made this thread about those who threatened to leave had she won.

As for the herp-derp, why must everything be serious? The point of this is to have a little laugh at the expense of a few indignant celebrities instead of getting stressed out over more serious political issues.

There's no Canadian accent, just like there's no American accent. We have regional accents that change from coast to coast.

Just like "English" accents are always upper class aristocrats.

Most people here in the US think I'm Australian because my Essex accent doesn't fit their preconception.

I'd love to see them talk to a Geordie...

We do have conservatives up here as well, and they're not to happy with the liberal government. A influx of liberal voters could be the end of their party, but they wouldn't be able to move to america because in trumps america immigrants are not welcome.

So you pretend to remember 2012 but don't remember me complaining about it back then as well. It has always been a ridiculous thing to say and it is also just as ridiculous to use it to create a false sense of superiority over it. That was true for each president, not just all the way back in 2012.
