I'm glad the fatality count is almost nil - I suppose New Zealand is at least semi prepared for natural disasters such as these.

I too hope our Zealander Dakkanauts stay safe over the next few weeks.

Its pretty bad down in the south island, an entire town has had all of its road, rail and sea communications cut and doesn't have water or food supplies to last more than a few days. It was pretty spooky wandering around our capital city earlier as I saw maybe 30 people, it was like a scene from a post apocalypse film.
We are having constant, minor, after shocks and it is making a lot of people nervous, last time this happened it took out the entirety of our third largest city.
To make matters worse we now have gale force winds and heavy rain so rock slides and land slips are increasing and light aircraft cant fly.

I never realised NZ was so prone to earthquakes.

NZ sits on the boundaries between two plates. The northern side is seeing the pacific plate subduct underneath the Australian plate whilst to the south it is the opposite way round. There is then a major fault that combines the two. Hence tectonically it is very active. Subduction also causes volcanoes of a type that is more explosive and damaging. Basically subducted material melts as it enters the mantle underneath the crust. Because it is full of volatiles (low temperature melting) this results in a cool sticky magma full of gas such as water, carbon dioxide and so on. When such systems erupt they go with a bang and cause the explosive eruptions with pyroclastic flows and so on, however the lava flows are generally slow because they are cool and sticky. These are the type of volcanoes that are very dangerous (Vesuvius amongst many others). There are other types of volcanoes though such as at ocean ridge boundaries (where the plates are moving apart and magma is upwelling) or at hot spots - the material erupting from these is much hotter and therefore flows more easily, has little gas (because it is from deep within the earth) and hence is much less explosive. Hawaii and Iceland are examples of such systems (though Iceland can become explosive because of all the ice, and that introduces gas back into the eruption).

Plate tectonics occurs because (simply) the rock in the earths mantle acts like a (very slow) convection cell (hot material rises, cool sinks). Where the material rises you get hot spots and oceanic ridges and where it sinks you get subduction zones.

The aftershocks are usually the kicker. They have a nasty tendency to catch people off guard and hamper rescue/recovery efforts. I'm just glad that the death toll was so low (none would have been better).

Lol at the article. Somebody really is stupid enough to believe 2011 quake was america done and Clinton knew it? Just because Clinton had email of it around 7pm while quake happened "next day" around noon? They forgot the time difference that's around 18 hours?

True! Sadly, though, herds usually number more than three. Looking at the devastation and collapsed/split earth, I shudder to think where the rest of the herd ended up.
