Subject: Lamb's Harlequin masque of the shattered prism WIP Blog New Update 12/16/16
So right after the Harlequin codex came out I knew I had to paint them. They just seemed like so much fun. I bought a few troupes and starweavers but at that time I got accepted to dental school and had to move. So I have not played since then and never got to finish painting my army. Well things have settled down a bit and I am finally going to finish painting my army. I also found a bunch of harlequins on ebay from the death masque box set, they were less than half the price I originally spent
Update 12/16/2016
Spoiler:
Whoo! I actually finished a starweaver. I am sorry I have posted anything in the last month but between thanks giving, finishing up projects and finals I haven't had much time. I know the lighting is bad. I have my first match on sunday and I am hoping to get some pics there.
Update: 11/15/16
Spoiler:
I am mostly done with the star weaver and sky weaver hulls. I am very pleased with the purple and jade. Now trying to incorporate my gold and silver into it. I still need to work on my troupes. Then I need to get all the crew for my starweavers and skyweavers. I feel like I have done a lot but I still have a ton of work. I want to finish them by Dec and move on to my dark eldar part of the army.
My work station:
Spoiler:
My small bedroom didn't even have a desk but I bought a cheap folding table with chair for $20 from target. I then covered the whole thing with drawer liner, to keep paint from spilling on it.
I just have a lot of work to do assembling everything.
Here are my current painting starweavers. I am going to go for a similar scheme but unfortunately they are going to need to be stripped.
First order of duty, lay down the base coat and masking.
Spoiler:
Here I am trying out vallejo model fluorescent paints. They are a huge paint to work with. There are only 5 colors, orange, yellow, green, blue and magenta. They are extremely transparent, you have to paint them over white and build a thick layer. This can be a problem as you can get paint pooling without realizing it because you don't know how much paint you have actually applied. I messed up a few times but overall the effect is nice. They do change color when mixing them so when magenta, the strongest of the colors, goes over blue, you get a very nice purple. The blues in the picture look a little dark, but really they are pretty light.
Next I started masking out the harlequin pattern. I used a pre-cut vinyl mask from Fallout hobbies. The sheets are pretty expensive at $10-15 a pop but they saved me so much time. When I first tried this I used painters tape. The diamonds were lopsided, they were not consistently the same size, the corners would tear, the tack from the tape out wear out easily. These are fantastic. I would never be able to cut diamonds of the smallest size and I think they are really looking great. Buying those saved me about 5 hours of work and a headache. In my original design my patters were pretty uniform, this time I wanted to make it more random and the light is more scattered like from a shattered prism.
I really love the fallout hobbies mask and the way that the different sized diamonds look. The randomness of the patter makes each starweaver look unique. My next step is to paint some planets and then spray the model black.
Color scheme consideration
Spoiler:
So one of my big problems with working with rainbows and galaxies is finding a fitting color scheme for the troupes. I think I have figured out how to tie everything together. I am going to paint the galaxy background purple and teal, split down the middle. The right half will be teal and the left will be purple. I can then translate that into diamonds on my models. I can then tie in the fluorescent rainbow in the model's hair and ribbons. Fallour Hobbies make the smallest diamond pattern an infantry size. I will try that to see if I can use my airbrush, if not, free hand it will have to be. For the bases I am thinking something darker but with glowing crystals coming out of the ground. I will make a mock up and post it when I can.
Here is a picture of the purple/teal galaxy idea:
Here is my first skyweaver I wanted to try out. Not sure if I should how I like the purple and teal as is.
Crazy ideas:
Spoiler:
So I have a super crazy idea of basing the models on cards. I have seen a few people who base their harlequins on cards and dice and various board game items. It is a unique look as it kinda breaks the fourth wall, but it kinda makes sense in a way. I like the idea of my harlequins shadowseer and death jester causing hallucinations that make the opponent go insane. No those are not really giant cards, they are just you going crazy. I have a technique of transferring images onto plastic and I think that these tarot arcana from personal look very fitting for my harlequins. Base my shadowseers on the wizard and hierophant, or my solitaire on death and the hermit. Sound pretty interesting but maybe won't translate too well to the game.

Just finished a mock-up of my color scheme for my harlequins. I am calling them the Masque of the Shattered Prism. I am working on making a purple and jade nebula effect. I am having a little trouble because the purple pigment is so much denser than the jade. I think I just need to thin my paints more, make the purple more of a wash to tint the white. I also f-ed up on the stars, they are way to big. The underside of the starweaver was just me trying a hex technique, I wanted it to look like the crystal was glowing but caged in. It didn't work so disregard that. Still I think this came out pretty swell.

Do you think I need more tonal variation in my purple and jade? Does the fact that it is supposed to be a galaxy/nebula come off clear without me saying, oh yeah its a galaxy? Is it too dark?

It absolutely comes across as a space vista. I wish I'd seen this before I tried my Void Weaver helmet (didn't go heavy enough on the nebula before the gloss, and not enough stars).
Looking at pictures of nebulae they do have a little more colour variation. Streaks of brighter purple and blue might look cool, but they look stunning as is!
Ridiculously gorgeous work. I love the idea you've put forward here and you accomplished a really good look. I'm very excited to see more work done on this force. Very inspiring stuff.

Worked on a few more of my hulls. I am struggling with the stars, as I fell I am putting them either too heavy or too many. I also am trying to add in gold and silver (they are my weapon/flip belt/back pack colors) I like the way the gold looks on the windshield but I don't like the way the silver looks on the rear. I am thinking of doing a gold accent on them to tie it together more. Also do I paint the vents on the side or leave them the galaxy colors they currently are?

Tough call on the vents. Truthfully I didn't even notice them there since your awesome paint job really stole the show. I'd personally be reluctant to do anything to them, I feel it looks fine as is.
What is your plan for the silver and gold? Will you be applying a wash or leaving them as is? For the silver on the back I would do agrax earthshade or nuln oil to add a bit of depth to it. The gold is much more difficult given it's location but perhaps highlighting it with a brighter gold would make it pop a bit more? Or highlighting it with runefang steel perhaps?
Fantastic work thus-far though, keep it up.

I am thinking of putting some gold over the silver and then use silver to highlight the gold. I am going to use a verdigris wash for the gold, hopefully it will look nice.

I think you've got the stars just about perfect. I was concerned about doing too many of them on my Void Dreamer helmet, and it's poorer because of that.
If you head out into the desert, or somewhere else really far away from light pollution, just look up. There's a thousand upon a thousand more stars out there than you can see looking up in any urban area.
Took this after washing the model to tone down the colors. Not the best picture but you can see what I am doing for a troupe. Its still very much a WIP. My main problem was that the green and purple paint is much darker when I am painting it then when I spray it on with an airbrush over white. So I had to find some close, lighter matches to the colors. This pic is just a comparison of the purple and green on the player vs the purple and green on the starweaver.

I am finally out of school for winter break and I got to finish my starweaver. My other ones are 80% finished, should have them all finished by sunday. I am really liking the color scheme I am just unsure about the ribbons. I think blue looks really good with the color scheme but I also like the idea of each unit having its own colors. We will see. I will try and post more in the next few days.
