So this seems like fun. This is going to be an account of all my future forays into my custom armies and fluff and conversions and whatnot, and what better place to keep track of it all than DakkaDakka?
My current project is making some KillTeams, although I've never played a game of it. Looking forward to getting it, though. My only friend I really play with has IG, so I will not being doing anything related to the Guard, unless it's my Traitor Guard...technicalities. Meh. He can't stand the sight of unfaithful Guardsmen who have dedicated themselves to Nurgle
Anyways, my current project's current project is my custom 2nd Legion Kill Team, lost in the Warp for millennia, thinking they were betrayed and left for dead in the Warp, only to return to real space to find nothing is as they remember, but their thirst for revenge is too ingrained for them to care, making them Renegade Marines. Here's a little of their fluff:
Spoiler:
Orginally the 2nd Legion, the Big E found their Primarch on the recently un-warpstorm-obscured planet of Geiverus. The entire system had been blocked off, and once the storm had cleared and the Emperor made his way in, every planet in the system seemed to have suffered massive devastation to the point of extinction, save for one planet. On the surface of Geiverus, tribal communities were all the remained of the civilizations that had collapsed millennia ago. None could remember their forebears, except for what they could discover in the dust coated ruins of massive buildings and strange technologies. These tribes all made their living next to the only ocean left on the planet, one that bore sustenance as well as danger, whether from storms and the like or the monstrous creatures that lurked beneath its surface. When the Primarch's capsule crashed into the planet, fortune had it that he was found by a rather peaceful group of tribals, rather than the malicious raiders that infested much of the population. He was taken in and raised, although always viewed as an oddity due to his growth and obviously his origins. Ezurian, he was named, after the native's tongue, which roughly translated into Angel of the Sea. He quickly gained respect as he grew, defending the tribe just as fervently as any native from raiders and beasts alike, feeling just as much at home on their roughshod fishing vessels as he did on solid ground. Eventually, he undertook the ritualistic challenge of hunting one of the "Submerged Ones", behemoth creatures of the One Ocean. This was how the elite warriors were chosen and honored, and the main idea was to retrieve one of the detached teeth of the mighty krakens to forge into their own blade. When Ezurian returned to the surface bearing the severed eye of one the krakens, he was immediately inducted as Chieftain, with the current leader reverently stepping down. He led the tribe to countless victories and they thrived, until the strange colors of the night sky (the warpstorm) changed and cleared, and the Emperor arrived, leading his armies of Space Marines. Ezurian was not one to turn down a challenge, but was a respectful warrior and chieftain, and upon hearing the Emperor's story, agreed to join with him without question, assuming the Emperor was really as magnificent as his followers claimed, and could best him in a test of mettle-the first to slay a queen kraken. More time passed than any human could've managed underwater, but eventually, the Emperor surfaced from the One Ocean, the colossal eye of a kraken queen impaled by its own teeth in tow. Ezurian returned to the surface shortly after, empty handed. Honoring their agreement, Ezurian joined with the Emperor, accepting his Legion as his own.
Abandoning their previous name, Ezurian gave them the name of the Void Krakens, a fierce creature he quickly came to learn of after his first contact with the Imperium. They changed their colors to sand brown and bright teal, reflecting their Primarch's tribal sigils. Each Marine already shared his sun-touched skin and most shared his bright blue eyes, although some had green or grey. Many shaved their heads, and they all adopted their progenitor's tribal ritualistic tattoos. The left side of their body was honors, and their right was dishonors. As such, with the abilities of most Marines, most had tattoos running the length of the left side of their body, including their face and skull. Their armor was likewise decorated, with bright blue scripture lining the left half of their armor, detailing their achievements and victories. Following in Ezurian's mental and genetic footsteps, they found themselves quickly able to adapt to nearly any kind of environment and situation they found themselves in, managing to squeeze a little extra luck out whenever they needed it most (the fortune aspect, anyone?). In firefights, their injuries had a knack for just missing the killing shot, their covering fire would just manage to nick the explosives concealed behind the enemy, and their reinforcements would tend to arrive just in time and in just the right place. They quickly earned a reputation for being generally hard to kill, and near impossible to defeat as a force. Their Primarch soon became a force all his own, as his ornate armor was intricately tattooed with countless honors, and his blade forged from the very teeth of their namesake, a void kraken, was known to cut through anything it came against as if it simply weren't there. He preferred to lead from the forefront, forming more of a brotherly bond with his Marines than most of his actual brothers. Ezurian also quickly came to venerate the Emperor, both as his father and as the ruler of the Imperium, quickly reaching Lorgar-levels of dedication and fervor, and his Marines followed suit. Lorgar and Ezurian, as such, became close brothers, as they shared many ideals and fanatical belief in the Emperor, although Ezurian eschewed Lorgar's tendency for monuments for honor in battle, where he also found a bond with Russ. Only a few years into the Great Crusade, the Void Krakens received a signal for reinforcements from the Wolves. The entire Legion, even as it was only three ships at the time and not even close to full strength due to Ezurian refusing to recruit from any planet other than Geiverus, responded, and agreed to travel alongside a nearby detachment of Word Bearers. The Void Krakens and Word Bearers entered the Warp, expecting to arrive within nine hours. Four hours into the trip, all communications between the two Legions shut down, and, unbeknownst to the Legions, an unprecedented attack of Warp-spawned entities ensued. The Word Bearers, for all their faith, were quickly overrun, and their command structure annihilated, but not before the strange warp beasts sent ghost transmissions of accusation to the Void Krakens, before the possessed ships' systems turned their working guns on the Krakens and opened fire. A quick firefight ensued, and the Word Bearers ships were all but destroyed, drifting lifeless into the Immaterium. The Void Krakens' ships did not fare much better, and only their main ship even remotely survived the exchange, although much of the ship's life support systems and basic functions were offline in most parts of the ship. Of his entire Legion, Ezurian managed to count roughly 150 of his Marines among the survivors, a crippling blow to his Legion. Under the belief that his most trusted brother's Marines had turned on him, he brooded on this and took on a dark demeanor as the fragments of his Legion drifted through the Warp for nearly half a century, their resilience and adaptive luck keeping many of them alive through the horrors and trials of being stranded in the Immaterium.
Eventually, as their luck would have it, a Black Templars vessel came upon their wreckage during Warp-travel (a completely alien concept to the Legion that only knew the original twenty, and completely alien to the Templars that did not know of the missing Legion as they had been stricken from the records as "the Lost".) Receiving a distress signal, the Templars boarded the wreckage, almost certainly convinced that it was a ploy by Chaos Marines, until they found the loyalist Marines genuinely reaching for assistance. Playing the situation, Ezurian and his Marines were cautiously brought aboard the Templars' vessel, and allowing his brewing rage to best him, proceeded to slaughter the Black Templars aboard it. Eventually reaching the bridge, Ezurian himself butchered the Templars Captain in charge, and nearly destroyed most of the bridge in his fit of rage at his betrayal and abandonment. Pillaging what equipment they could from the Templars and their ship, the Primarch's rage found him accidentally disengaging the Warp drive of the ship, and dropped back into real space in the 41st millennium, as the Warp has a knack for time distorting shenanigans. Realizing his position, Ezurian and his Marines set about getting their revenge on the father and Imperium that had turned on him and abandoned them, and soon found the strange Chaos Marines to be an even more interesting prey. They hunted anyone and everyone they could, knack for survival and piracy keeping them on their feet and their casualties almost non-existent. They currently skirt the rim of the galaxy, preying on Marines' Penitent Crusades and raider colonies.
I will upload the pictures I have of my test Marine when I can figure it out...bear with me....it is also my first attempt at an "easy" True Scale Marine (and no I know it's not actually True Scale, but it looks more proportional than a regular Marine mini, so )
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Since they've been lost in the Warp for awhile, I figured, what with scavenged armor and whatnot, that each Marine would put his own version of the Legion insignia on their shoulder instead of a uniform print, hence why it's a little more complicated and it won't exactly match any other Marines'.
Automatically Appended Next Post: That being said, I don't like the way the scratches on the armor came out on this one, and will probably stick to basic chipping in the future, at least for these guys. Their blades are supposed to be made out of the teeth of the krakens and other monsters from beneath the waves on their home planet, hence the odd green color that I actually really like in comparison to the armor.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Well update, as far as the fluff is concerned, it was brought to my attention that Vankraken had already done a similar chapter (with the same name!), albeit different colors, but the ideas are close enough that he has the right to it and I'm gonna choose a different avenue to take my 2nd Legion.
Alright so this is a link to my first attempt at a custom Marine chapter, but Chaos. I think we will go with them lol nothing has popped up to say someone has done it before, so we will see how they turn out. Looking forward to trying the black/aqua color scheme

Well...I have switched shifts at work, and thus 80% of my painting time has disappeared. So between general lack of time and working on commissions, I won't have a lot of time to dedicate to painting my own stuff, but hopefully with the move to a new house coming up (where hopefully I'll have a space all my own for painting), I'll be able to at least knock out my custom Kill Team soon....What follows is a remix of my custom Space Marines: Legio Therion. Summed up, they have a Space Wolves-esque feel, but less animal-oriented and more savage/primitive. They will definitely use some Wolves bits, due to their Primarch being coined "The Bear" and their symbol bearing the image of the world being rent by animal claws. They won't share the excessive runes, fetishes, and totems of the Wolves, but will utilize "bear pelts" to a certain degree, along with the addition of ritualistic spikes made of bones to their armor as status symbols (Sergeants may have a single shoulder spike, while Captains may have an array of horns across their armor, making them difficult to get near, and also reinforcing their tendency to jump straight to melee, much like their canine-obsessed brethren. (This is all assuming that someone, somewhere, has done something at least somewhat similar, as I'm hoping to avoid another incident like with the Void Krakens idea)
Even if no one reads or replies to this, it's actually turning out to be pretty fun putting up my own fluff and pictures of work (I know there's not a lot right now but I'm working on it!)

So I'm working on a commission for Harlequins from the Death Masque set, and they are turning out to be fun/a pain. The diamonds can be a real nightmare in some spots, but then again that may just be poor choice on which parts get diamonds. I've also been working on Eldrad, and decided to try some easy blending on the cloak. Below are some of the (almost) completed Harlequins, with some easy blending on the hair that I wanted to try as well. No diamonds for this batch, yet, but there are some I still haven't uploaded.

Thank you! Sadly, none of these except the marines up top are mine. Doing commissions has consumed my painting time, leaving all my armies to sit as grey plastic. Although in the next few months, I should be going on a nice 8 week paternal leave, and maybe, just maybe, I can paint some of my own stuff!

I'd love to except I've got enough commissions on the table that by the time one wash dries, I'm still not done washing the whole batch!
Oh well, maybe my personal stuff will find some love in the future lol
fatty wrote:I really like the fade in the hair. Subtle blend
Thanks! Tried just feathering it together with a very thin wash to help the transition.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So here's some more stuff.
First, some Starweavers to go with the rest of the Harlequins. These are still WIP, obviously (missing a rider?) and I'm only a little ways into the blending in order to get the diamond pattern to fade into the regular color of the bike, before solidifying the pattern itself (I know there are still brush strokes in the blue!!)
And then I got a new commission...Magnus, Daemon Primarch. I was thrilled when a new client contacted me wanting me to pain this absolute beast. He made the design choice to leave most of the armor off the wings, and hey, to each his own. It wasn't until I finished the skin and began the metal that I realized he built it with the mask, not Magnus' actual face...whoops Need to go back and fix that...right now I'm starting on all the bone areas, especially the fabled "nipple horns" that everyone seems so worked up about...idk about anybody else, but I'm not charging into face-to-face combat with someone sporting spikes on their chest...
Currently working on a couple Blood Bowl armies for the same client as the Harlequins so those will be up soon!

Got to paint some more today! While working on the Harlequins, I decided to take a break from those Emperor-forsaken diamond patterns and work on something else.
Sooooo back to Magnus I went!
And the only thing I did was block out most of the gold details, and he already looks much, much more...princely. Fantastic model, but I'll cut my thumb off if I ever have to paint him fully assembled again...

Back again! It's been a fun painting weekend, but these commissions are taking waaaaaaaaaaaay too long
Finished partially assembling the final model for the Harlequins (the Voidweaver) and started on it, the gunner, and the passengers to the jetbikes.
I didn't want the Voidweaver to look just like the jetbikes, save for a different color, so I opted to play on the name, emphasis on the "void" part, and threw a little galaxy on the nose after I stopped counting the purple glaze layers to the nose thanks to the tutorial that popped up by Alpharion on Midwestwargaming, I finally found a method to painting these little galaxy-scapes that is quick but I actually like the look of...

Thank you! They are only supposed to be up to a tabletop standard, but I wanted to them to be more than just flat colors, especially the black/purple Voidweaver.

Great looking stuff - though I feel the starfield on the eldar bike thingy is a bit subdued - might look better with bigger stars or glossier black. I like those CSM in the start too!

Thanks! I was wondering if maybe a gloss coat would help it a bit...like I said, they are supposed to be tabletop so as much as I can do for as little effort as possible (not including the diamonds lol)

The Harlequins are finished!! Sadly, pictures are almost worse than usual since the commission was helping pay the bills and I was rushing to get them packed up to get them to the store, leaving me with little time to actually photograph each Harlequin on its own...sorry please keep in mind, though, that these are strictly to my "tabletop standard". Still haven't ever painted anything to my maximum-effort level lol
Without further ado, my long overdue Harlequins:

Welp, finally got another one under my belt. This one was pretty fun, although like I said, I'll cut my thumb off if I have to paint something this large fully assembled again...
Presenting, Magnus the Red, finally finished and delivered!!
Now that he's out of the way, I've got the Ork Blood Bowl team, the Human Blood Bowl team, a House Terryn Knight Titan, and Celestine with her Gemini all up on the queue...although two weeks until fatherhood, and then 6 weeks of painting time!

Gotta love this take on the whole "fantasy football" thing. Never played yet, but just the sheer humor of Bloodbowl is fantastic...so I finally finished my first Bloodbowl commission!
Introducing (for those of you who are familiar with the Kansas City Chiefs regalia): the "Cheefz"!!
The all even have actual numbers from the Chiefs' roster, although I'm not a fan of the sport and don't exactly know who does what...Still, they were a blast to paint.

7 weeks off work for paternity leave, and I got so much painting done!
That's a lie. I did not. I did manage to finish this though...
Test of Honor released with a promo miniature for stores who ordered copies and my FLGS actually chose me to paint it. Afterwards, it was raffled off. I was honored they picked me and tried to make it as nice as I could. The arms were separate pieces and while the fan arm went on fairly easily, the knife arm...was a different story.
TL;DR: lots of liquid green stuff later, I finally got it on
On a side note, with the release of Shadow War: Armageddon, I got a friend to come down and teach me how to play. So in preparation for that, I finally broke out the Start Collecting: Skitarii box my fiance bought for me last year...and yet, something wasn't right. I just couldn't stand that they hadn't been touched by Papa Nurgle...and so they took the dive into the Ruinous Powers, some metal being replaced by raw, taut skin fused with machinery, some fleshy bits had the skin slough off, leaving nothing but bone, and of course, spiky bitz.
My Arch-Heretek of Nurgle. The banner will be much cooler when painted with a cool Chaos Star design. Chopped of his cane arm to have him dragging around a friend, replaced his Omnissiah-guided axe with something a little more savage, and of course added the banner.
I know the pictures are dark but that was my old phone (now I have a new one!) and I might take new pictures later...oh well.
Right now I'm working on an Imperial Knight commission, so pics soon!

Finished up another commission (finally!). This time was an Imperial Knight of House Terryn, fully magnetized with a bit of hatred for Orks and Iron Warriors...
The bare bones of the Knight, without any options magnetized to it.

It has been months...lack of a work computer has had its effects (long story)...anyways, in the past few weeks I have really buckled down after moving houses and gotten back into painting nearly every day, always with more commissions coming in faster than I can't paint them! I'm honored really...but here's some progress updates! I'm now looking into trying to really develop my own style, but for now, I'm sticking with what clients like. Pictures to be added here in just a bit...
