And I've just come out of a match where the Darius and Jarvan players spent the whole game raging at each other. Jarvan forgot to take Smite, Darius had taken it for some reason but refused to change roles, and then it was twenty minutes of juvenile edgelord smacktalk in chat before the enemy team put us out of our misery. That was just the most recent and outstanding one, but pretty much every game over the last few days has had ragers or at best, the low-level toxicity like "gg ez", "Why?", etc. Including one charming fellow who constantly baited and smacktalked and happily admitted that he was doing it to upset and tilt me. And heck, he succeeded and got a win out of it. Or heck, leaving lane for ten seconds to place wards, having your carry decide that would be the perfect moment to 1v2, die and then rage at you.
Riot keep making a big deal about how they're reforming players and eliminating toxicity, and I feel confident in saying it's all lies based on what I've seen. Yes, I mute, yes I report, but there's always a fresh ragekid in the next game fearlessly clattering on his keyboard behind a hyper-edgy username and persuading himself he'd be Diamond rank if every other team member except him wasn't a gibbering idiot.
It's frustrating because I like the game, but the playerbase is utterly foul, and I'm sure it would only be worse in ranked.
Just venting a bit.

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich." |

I had much the same sort of experience when I tried in the past, years ago, and it turned me off from ever going back.
That said, I work with some guys that team up a lot and their experiences have all been pretty good. But they're higher ranked so the riff-raff don't really make an appearance anymore.

It's been a while, but back when I started I found wonderful advice from this guide. Ignore the gear, I'm sure it's wildly outdated. But the attitude it fosters will carry you through the lower tiers- and honestly, there is little more fun than running from a bush at ridiculous speeds, devouring an opponent and saying 'NOMNOMNOM' in all chat.
As you might imagine, it contains a fair bit of profanity.

There's a reason I haven't played it for a couple of years now. The game, the company, and the community are trash.

Its a multiplayer game. Of course you're going to run into donkey-caves. The problem though is that as its a moba, where the teams are locked in, you can't just leave and find a new game, and are pretty much stuck with them for at least 20 minutes.
Unless you want to be punished for leaving.
Oh, and good luck on ranked, because there's a high chance that you will do relatively well, but you get a crappy team who didn't get the memo that its a team game, and will try to solo everything

It's a logical fallacy to claim that all multiplayer game communities are equally bad.

Anecdotally, it's much better now. There's still toxicity, but I personally see a lot less games where one person makes a mistake then the whole team does nothing but flame and blame anything and everything on that mistake from 25 minutes ago. Of course, it still happens, but it's like a 1 in 50 games for me now. There's also the guy I had on a team a couple days ago, who seemed to legitimately believe that flaming your team is an actual way to make them perform better. Now, the dude is in Silver, so I guess that strategy got him out of Bronze, maybe? In my actual ranked games I've encountered a lot more of a teamwork mindset, and I'm not sure if it was from people that were teaming up to go into ranked and not wanting to cost their buddies the game by flaming/trolling, but I do ranked solo and I climbed out of Gold fairly easily last season and with little to no stress put on me by my teammates. I see more rage in normals, which amuses the crap out of me.
It seems like most people I encounter have accepted that they can't blame their teams for where they are in MMR, although you always have the people that refuse to believe they're not that good.

You know, I know people who have a lot of fun with this game, and I've considered picking it up once or twice. Despite all the talk about the community, maybe once I get past the learning curve -

Hah, wow, okay. Avoiding this one like the plague until the heat-death of the universe, then.

I think league is the most toxic of the mobas. There are certainly other ones to try. I play Heroes of the Storm and while I wouldn't give the community an A+ it's never been so toxic as to be thoroughly frustrating.
