Howdy folks,

Just wanted to stop in and say hey.

In the process of getting into this, for the first time.

Right now, I'm reading the lore, and trying to decide which faction of space marines i'll start out with. there are several "get started" boxes available and that seems like as good of a place as any. Space Wolves sound appealing, but their get started pack doesn't include a vehicle, whereas the ultramarines and the blood angels get a dreadnought and a mini tank thing.

Four of my other friends will also be getting a get started box, so we can battle with each other. FWIW we're all employed and at or around 30 years old, so the cost isn't as offputting to everyone as the time investment in painting ironically. I'm actually looking forward to painting minis. (I might be ripping my hair out later in massive nerd rage, who knows).

Of course, any suggestions, tips, from buying minis, to painting them, and even on which lore material might be most apropros to read. I've been reading the articles on the 40k wiki, which are pretty interesting in and of themselves.

M

If you're wanting to play marines, I suggest skipping 40k all together and playing 30k. It has better models, rule sets, and fluff. Protip (although this may be a given to you) never pay GW prices, always buy on eBay or Amazon. Saves you a lot of money in the long run. Also, If I was you I would try reading about the SW, BA, DA, or GK. They tend to have very unique traits and play styles that make them stand out from the rest of the marines.

I've done a lot of reading about the Frost Wolves. I definitely like them. I like the idea of a faction whose primarch is not officially deceased. Like, maybe in the heat of battle Leman Russ just shows up and wreaks havoc.

My understanding of 30k is that it's fairly limited.

One of my friends is planning on playing Eldar.
Another is planning on going Orks.
And another is leaning heavily towards Daemons. Last one still undecided.

Are those races even present in 30k? part of what is drawing us into the hobby is the availability of the starter kits, and the variety of races.

One thing that has me slightly confused is that i've read about optional gear pieces. Like for instance, you buy a kit and it comes with several different weapons you could equip. Once you glue the model together you're locked into that decision forever, right?

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
