Sorry for making two threads in such a short amount of time, but I just found half of my necron army in the basement so I don't plan on a second army until 8th edition. I have a necron lord, 20 warriors, 4 scarabs, 5 destroyers, and a monolith and was wondering if half that army is competitive for 7th edition. Also, what should I add or cut to make a 1250 point competitive army? Thanks.

This is all you need to know. Build a decurion and start with a reclamation legion. You will need at least 1 unit of immortals and 1 unit of those fancy necron jet bikes and a codex for all the rules. What is in the decurion

Are destroyers and monoliths still competitive? I hear a lot of mixed opinions on monoliths and I've heard tomb blades are superior to destroyers. Or maybe I'll run them anyway if they are so called underpowered so I won't run a cheese list and get yelled at.

Monoliths are meh.
You are really gonna see necrons shine in higher point games like 1250+ at least i have noticed.
In lower games, they are a bit dicey. What i have seen is most of their power comes from their lord, or HQ, and in lower point games its a lot easier to focus him, and once he is gone, its just moping up the last of it.

To many unpainted models to count. |

At 1250. the models you have are totally viable and would be fun to play against. Necrons have gotten a bunch of new toys in the last couple of editions, but all their old stuff is still great. With the exception of the monolith. that poor death dealing pyramid got hit hard by codex creep. but at 1250 and in a semi casual playgroup even the monolith could still be played without handicapping your army too hard.

Destroyers are all right but they are nowhere near what they used to be. A close combat destroyer lord on the other hand is great. Those new bikes fit two entirely new roles in your army they can gain ignore cover and you can use them as cheap objective grabbers since they are extremely fast.

Destroyers in a Destroyer Cult are very powerful, but Tomb Blades are an exceptionally cost effective model (points wise).
Nine tomb blades are also arguably one of the cheesiest, if not the cheesiest kill team lists possible.

You could easily drop one of the Deathmarks to get under 1250. You won't really notice the loss of one of those.

You know that you can't have those scarabs or destroyers in a Decurion, right?

Yes you can, you just have to take them in on of the formations with some other unit choices

I don't get the codex until Monday. I get 4+ reanimation rolls on a reclamation legion. Do I lose the 4+ rolls if I add destroyers? Does it become unbound then? Or do I just need a destroyer lord to make it another regiment to keep the 4+ rolls in addition to other bonuses?

To keep the decurion, you have to add units in their specified detachments as per the image in post 2.
So you can have your reclamation legion but then to ensure the destroyers comply, you need at least 3 and one lord to have a valid "destroyer cult".
You can then add in other "modules" (canoptek harvest etc) if you want to add more units.
Also remember that each of the "modules" has their own rules that apply to that unit on top of the decurion benefits.

If you are going unbound you lose all command benefits, note that some detachments might give other bonuses that are not classed as command benefits, these don't lose. The +1 on reanimation protocols however is a command benefit so you will lose this bonus if you are going unbound.
How do you avoid being unbound -> By being battle forged.
This is simpler than you might think.
rulebook wrote:There is no limit to the number of Detachments a Battle-forged army can include and you
can use any mixture of Detachments you have available, within the restrictions of the rules that follow.
However, all of the units in your army must belong to a Detachment and no unit can
belong to more than one Detachment
So you just have to find an other way to put those units in a detachment if they are hard to fit in the decurion. Popular options are Combined arms detachments and formations. So you could do (Decurion with its +1 reanimation protecols for all the units and formations in it ) & (Combined Arms Detachment without the +1 reanimation protocols for the units in it.).
This is the way to field the more obscure units such as FW units, fortifications or even destroyers without a destroyer lord, or scaraps etc.
Notice that a CAD does give objective secured this bonus isn't the +1 on reanimation protocols but it still can win you games.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also you don't have to go decurion. You could just field all the models you have in a cad

I will also forward you to the CAD (Combined Arms Detatchment). Basically the old 1 HQ and 2 Troop format.
This looses out on the +1 RP, but you gain ObSec on your troops (which is actually quite powerful).
I dont know what the people here are saying, destroyers are still quite good, even out of the formation. Keep in mind that these guys Jump-Shoot-Jump. So if you arm a few heavy destroyers with their longer ranged gun, you can move 6" around a wall>shoot an enemy unit>move 2D6 in assault phase back around the wall so you cant be shot at. Very powerful (but limited by your short ranged weapons)
