Because it seems interesting. What'd be a good place to start?

Modelwise, if you're interested in Space Marines either Mark III or IV armour, Burning of Prospero or Betrayal at Calth respectively are good.

I'd prefer BaC, simply due to more options and neutral leader models.

I'd the get the HH Red Books, and just go with whatever Legion you fancy.

Hey JNA,

This one has al the generic HH rules and also all generic units any Legion can take:
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-NL/The-Horus-heresy-legiones-Astartes-Age-of-Darkness-Army-List

This one has Legion specific units for most of the Legions that were released when this book came out. It includes Death Guard among others (but new Legions like Thousand Sons are not in there):
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-NL/The-Horus-Heresy-Legiones-Astartes-Age-of-Darkness-Legions

These books have most of what you will need to get started.

Edit: I agree, Betrayal at Calth and Burning of Prospero are great places to start. Burning has the Mark III Marines that most people model their Death Guard in.
