Why don't you just buy them when they come out instead of pre-ordering anything ever since you don't get them any more than one day earlier?

Pardon the snark, some people just can't help themselves.

I haven't preordered from GW before but generally I find that unless the company explicitly state they will send it out beforehand, they don't and just release it first thing on release day (so that would be the shipping date, not received date).

The one good thing about Preorders is that it ensures you have a copy of the thing. Previously this wasn't an issue with GW products as, due to their bad publicity, most people weren't in a hurry to buy them and they often put out far more than the random handful of crazy nutcases can buy out at once. Nowadays with GW actually making desirable products again, preorders are useful if you wanna make sure you get what you see rather than wait a month or two for the second printing.

Also some items are one-off productions, so preorders are a good way to ensure you get them.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Yea, limited editions can be gone within hours. If you wait until they are released they'll be long gone.

I'm sorry. I'm used to online gaming, where pre-orders actually are pointless nowadays since pretty much all new games require being online so you could just download them on launch day. I also had a fairly bad experience with pre-ordering a recent WH40k video games that's coloring my viewpoint. Sometimes I forget that pre-ordering isn't pointless when physical goods are involved, and I forget not everyone has a local store. My apologies. Please continue the discussion and ignore what I said earlier. I will edit it out of existence after posting this.

With Games Workshop, typically if you Pre-Order it the weekend it goes up and ask for it to be delivered to your local store it'll be there for you on the day of release.

If you ask for it to be delivered to your home address, it typically won't arrive until the Monday or Tuesday after (unless you live in a place where the Post delivers on the weekend, then it might get to you on the day of/after release). It might even take longer depending on how reliable your local post service is or if you pre-order later in the week.

Or at least, that's what I've found.

ok this is what i expected. Now what about un-official GW stores that carry GW products. would ANY store get some in advance?

They seem to be really good at getting things there on the release day or maybe the delivery before release day. I bet this varies from store to store, because shipping varies in the US. Also some stores are going to move more product and probably get treated a little bit different.

When I used to pre-order from GW they got them in a few days before official release date or the day before, depending on the store. But they always distributed them when the stuff was officially released.

They used to have an open copy too for books where you could have a look, but you couldn't have yours until the Saturday of release

EDIT: But it's best to pre-order before the delivery day (for me it was usually Wednesday), otherwise yours doesn't come until the week after

Yeah, pre-ordering from GW directly is pretty useless imo. They send it out on the release day, so you will have to wait till Tuesday/Wednesday.

If I pre-order from my clubs online retailer, I have it on release day at the latest! More common ist Wednesday/Thursday before release!

I'd say it's pretty useless too, unless it's limited edition stuff (which is overpriced in my opinion, but still limited).

It all depends on who you pre-order from. My bloodbowl stuff should be getting delivered today, for example.

Heh. When I had a White Dwarf subscription coming to my house by mail, one time it turned up a few days early. As in, I got a White Dwarf magazine a few days before anyone else on the planet outside of GW was able to get their hands on it.

The fact you have next month's WD in your hands with advance info of upcoming stuff before anyone else isn't worth mentioning on Dakka though. You should just read what it says and keep what you read to yourself and your IRL buddies and not even mention it happened online until it becomes moot when the magazine is being sold everywhere.
