This might sound like a stupid question but I just wanted confirmation. When a model can take an upgrade of a power weapon that doesn't immediately mean it's a power sword right? He can decide between a sword, axe, maul or lance? Thanks

Yep unless it says its a specific power weapon its any power weapon

And as a guard player, unless you're fighting Orks, Tau or Necron, take the power axe, as its extra strength and higher AP make the lower initiative strike worth it. As humans rarely hit first anyways.

Power maul lets you penetrate most vehicle.
It won't explode but the image of a guard sgt hitting a tank with a stick and breaking the main cannon is funny(source: have done).
Power maul makes your sgt str 5 and can deny ork warbikes their save.
