Looked around and found a lot of articles kind of close to what I am looking for but none that actually did so here it goes:

I have a bunch of Marines to paint but I was going to leave off the SHoulder Pads and add them later after painting them seperately. What are some practical ways to prime and paint the pads separately? I was thinking wires attached to a corkscrew as it could handle a few at a time for that but then not sure if it would mess up the attachment to the marine when the time comes for the two the embrace and become friends. Any thoughts appreciated.

Attach a wad of puddy to a tooth pick? Mold it to fit the shoulder pad on, and should keep it pretty steady.

If you are just using some wire, then a dab of super glue on the tip will hold it in place, and some light filing when you pop it off should have it perfect for attaching to the arm after painting.

You can also get some blue tack and use that, easy clean up with that as well.
