I haven't read upon the background of magnus but wouldn't it be strange for a unique character to have 3 head options, is there a reason for this ?

Mutations over time? A head change would be fairly mild on the scale of physical changes during ascendancy to Daemon Prince-hood...

There is no Canon, 40K exists through the filter of how you choose to 'believe' it (meaning pick the head you prefer).

Or maybe he was regular looking and obtained/lost a hat, then got hulked out on warpdust. Who knows!?

He can change his phsyical appearance at will, and changing his face is easy.

Because of mythological reasons and to allow the players to pick which face they want the most. He used to originally be a Cyclops with only one eye centered in his head, then they changed it to two eyes but one removed. For nostalgia purposes they allowed one to pick which ones they'd prefer then forcing the choice on players.

That and he's a Daemon Prince of Tzeentch, I imagine he could change how his face looks depending on how he is feeling.

Wow so it is fluff ambiguity that results in multiple modelling options. I like this a lot. : )

Matt Holland the sculptor told me at W40K Open Day that it was for all the possible versions favoured by players - the missing an eye natural look, the old-fashioned retconned Cyclops (he was a Cyclops in his first incarnations) and the mask face gives another option. From the horse's mouth so to speak!

Magnus has always been able to change his appearance, even before he became a Daemon Primarch of Tzeentch. In The First Heretic there are a few points where his remaining eye changes colour (Lorgar even calls it out at one point). Later on (either in TFH or maybe Betrayer, I can't remember) Magnus and Lorgar then have a discussion about how Magnus inherited the Emperor's shifting appearance, and that people see him as they want to see him or he wants to be seen. Some see him as missing his eye, others as a cyclops of ancient myth, and others as a hundred other forms.

Go look into the background forum and see if you can find any the times people got touchy over whether Magnus should be a cyclops or just missing an eye. (What? An obvious mutant is a primarch! This cannot beeeee! Ignore Sanguinius and his wings, etc.)

So whatever flavor of Magnus the read you want to field, you've got an option for it.

The in fiction explanation is that Magnus projects an aura that causes different people to see him differently, it's similar to an ability the emperor uses.
