I was going to add a Firebase Support Cadre to my growing Tau army and I was wondering if it would be OK to swap a XV104 Riptide from the formation for a XV107 R'varna.
I know rules wise I'm not allowed but I feel the R'varna suits the idea of the formation better.

If you played against this would this be OK

No.

However, if you want to use it in a CAD, that's perfectly acceptable rules-wise.

No, wait until IA14 comes out. There could be rules for it in there.

nope cant do it.

For the rules you cannot. In addition, I doubt people will allow you because Riptides are generally already strong and not loved.

Still, I would allow you as a friend if you forewarned me. Maybe I could ask you something "in change" like a change in the CAD, a bonus or something else (if my army is a weak one, no bonus for scatterbikes )

How is the meta? Do you have people willing to work around it? That makes the difference.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

Thanks for the replies, like I said in the original post I know its not in the rules yet.

The local group is a lot of Knight armies, Wraithstars and Riptides

As part of a formation, but using XV107 rules, don't be silly.

As unbound, whatever.

As part of an apocalypse game, the bar is open for horse trading.

This is why unbound is a thing. It trades in your formation bonuses for that extra bit of flexibility,.

I always thought that an Endless Waltz type of Riptide Wing would be cool, with one of each variant in the wing.

Of course, there is no provision for that in the rules, but WTH.

Why's it silly. Here's two examples of a Firebase Support Cadre that I would take against Knights

Example 1 (490pts)
Broadside ( Heavy Rail Rifle, Seeker Missile, MV4 Shield Drone, Counterfire Defense System ) 90pts
Broadside ( Heavy Rail Rifle, Seeker Missile, MV4 Shield Drone, Counterfire Defense System ) 90pts
R'varna ( Pulse Submunition Cannons x2, MV84 Shielded Missile Drones x2 ) 310pts

Example 2 (489pts)
Broadside ( Heavy Rail Rifle, Twin-linked Plasma Rifle, Seeker Missile, MV4 Shield Drone x2, Counterfire Defense System ) 107pts
Broadside ( Heavy Rail Rifle, Twin-linked Plasma Rifle, Seeker Missile, MV4 Shield Drone x2, Counterfire Defense System ) 107pts
Riptide ( Ion Accelerator, Twin-linked Fusion Blaster, MV84 Shielded Missile Drones x2, Stimulant Injector, Counterfire Defense System ) 275pts

They are nearly the same points, yet example 2 has the points spread out and in theory more survivable

Knights, Riptides and Wraithknights? I think a Y'vahra would be better than a R'varna to put among your FBC, IF your opponent allows it. As others have said, RAW you cannot.

Why's it silly?

Because, as I understand formations, using the particular combination grants benefits. Why would you keep the benefits if you used a different combination? A line has to be drawn SOMEWHERE.... (as it happens, mine is to ignore formations and superheavies where possible).
