Remove allies system. You cannot take formations and detachments that are not from your codex or chapter - with some exceptions. Any of the allowed allies would be treated as allies of convenience
--Effectively reduce the game to players playing singular codices, for the most part.

Space marines can take formations or allied detachment of the new "Imperial Agents" and Deathwatch and Imperial Knights
Space marines cannot have intermixed "chapter tactics" in the same game.
*Basically no more superfriends or gladius with white scars chapter tactics and a librarius conclave with tiggy.

IG / storm troopers can take formations or allied detachment of the new "Imperial Agents" and Deathwatch

Admech can take formations or allied detachment of the new "Imperial Agents" and Imperial Knights

Imperial Knightss can take formations or allied detachment of the new "Imperial Agents" and Admech

The following would need to exist, all of which could take chaos knights/renegade knights
Chaos SM undivided book - detachments that allow specific legions to be created. these legions cannot have intermixed "legion tactics" in the same force.
Demons undivided book - detachments that allow multiple demon types would be included

Books with mixed demons and CSM based on each god.
Khorn Daemonkin
Tzeentch Daemonkin
Nurgle Daemonkin
Slaanesh Daemonkin

Eldar can only take allied detachments or formations from the Harlequin book
Dark Eldar can only take allied detachments or formations from the Harlequin book
Harlequins can take either eldar or dark eldar allies but never both at once.

Tau can take either Tau empire or farsight options and if there was a new codex of Xenos Mercs as allied detachments and formations

Tyranids and genestealers can take allied detachments and formations from each other

Necrons - get the short end of the stick as they have no natural allies - would be a good chance for a new race

Orks - get the short end of the stick as they have no natural allies - would be a good chance for a new race

How would something like this affect the game? Would you like knowing you could show up to a tournament or the FLGS and have hard rules that restrict cheesy combos and cross army shenanigans? But still allow some fluff based allegiances?

This makes me very sad, as I like running wildly mixed Imperium. It would, however, make the game a bit more balanced. Not that much, though-Eldar would become better, since they're OP in one Codex, but Spice Maroons are still damn good.

In addition, CSM and Daemons should be able to ally freely with each other.

Overall, I feel like this is a "quick fix" and those rarely help very much.
