Why would my picture quality change in and out while watching stuff on Amazon Prime?

All the PS3 settings are set to the 1080 output, etc.

Current download speed is 22.3mbps.

So...what am I missing?

Oh, the ps3 is wirelessly connected to the router...in case that makes a difference (the distance is less than 10' away through one wall)

Just theorizing/shooting from the hip here... but could it be that Prime is "optimized" for the PS4 OS, and doesn't quite like the PS3? I know I have issues on my PS3 that are similar to yours, that I do not have on the PS4.

I do know that one thing that will cause it to change picture quality is buffering issues, which as I said, could be down to software issues beyond your control, or it could be due to the bandwidth getting used someplace else.

Prime isn't optimised for PS4. All modern video clients use a variety of codecs (compression/decompression) plug-ins, of which MP4 is the most popular.

Apart from your bandwidth, the most crucial factor is the type of original footage and how it was compressed. For example, black and white compresses better than colour, and fast movement compresses worse than slow movement.

Therefore you probably are only seeing differences caused by the nature of the original footage and compression settings.

For example, a slow panning shot over the desert in the B&W film "The Sheikh" will look awesome. A shot of dozens of brightly costumed dancers in a Bollywood film is likely to be obviously pixellated.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
