So I am currently writing up some base plot lines for a Dungeons and Dragons Campaign, based around a Pirate Ships and miniature Islands. The main gist is that there are multiple Islands (10 in this case) in which there are ruins of an ancient civilization. Deep inside each of these ruins is a piece of a key to open up a final Dungeon where an ancient artifact is stored. So I need to come up with some generic themes for about 10 "mini dungeons". Not necessarily something specific about each dungeons layout or anything, but something to make each ruin/Island feel unique to the others.
So far I have things like:
One Island has a small island neighboring it, with islanders living on it, who do not venture to the main island, because they say its "cursed" (in reality the traps layed down in the ruins are still active).
One is inside of a volcano (probably along the inner rim of it, suspended over the lava.
One has sunken below the waves, and will be a classic "water temple".
One will probably just be a Standard "Ruins deep inside a jungle", Indiana Jones style, probably will be the first dungeon to introduce the PCs to the plot.
One where Islanders are living in the ruins already, perhaps have found the piece, and revere it as some sort of artifact, and don't want to give it to the PCs.
I can flesh out the actual dungeons themselves fairly easy, I just am looking for some ideas for basic themes. References and obvious stand-ins for Video game Temples and dungeons are not only okay but kind of encouraged. (I am a sucker for References).
Thank you in advance for any ideas you can throw my way
