I want to make a Thunderbolt fighter but hate forgeworlds model for it. I found a star wars A-wing fighter and Star Wars T-47 snow speeder kit and think I can do some cool conversions using those models as a base. However some problems...

The kits are 1/48... is that big enough to look good if I convert the cockpit and put an imperial navy pilot in it? I don't want it to look awkwardly small.

The second problem is I love both models and need to pick one. What do you guys think? Is there a cooler model out there that I do not know about?

The third I need to add armor on it to make it look more armored then the lightning fighter I have. Again, I don't want it to look awkward.

These are the models I would use....

A-Wing

T-47

What does you Lightning Fighter look like? Is it stock or another counts as?

"We have lost the element of surprise, and they do not fear us. Perhaps they will appreciate our devotion to the Emperor and our ruthless efficiency."

I think for 40k-ification the Speeder is your best bet, the more angular lines and blockiness means it'll take less work to match the Imperial aesthetic.

Imperial flyers also tend to be quite front-heavy. Depending on how much conversion you're willing to do, I think you'd be best served by 'reversing' the whole model's profile, so the rear window becomes the front of the canopy, the exhaust housings become engine intakes or weapon mountings, the guns become exhausts ect. It'd be a lot of work, but it would definitely look more appropriate than something that was obviously once a T-47 with a 40k paintjob.

I'd also consider the Y-Wing as an Imperial-esque look. There was a guy on another forum who made some fantastic conversions swapping bits from a TIE Fighter and a Y-Wing.

The lightning I have is the OOP forgeworld model.

I do not mind a lot of converting... I love modeling and will work on it as long as it takes. I just need a good base.

As for the Y Wing, I really do not like it as much.
