So with the roommate moving out I've decided to go full 40k nerd and turn the game room into a hive city.
It will consist of at least 80 tablescape tiles or other 1'x1' tiles that anyone would suggest. I will be getting approximate $925 in gamesworkshop buildings to cut and convert. Gonna set it all on the floor, frame it, reinforce with a steel cage then cover in clear resin.

A few problems arise such as how much weight should each "door" to the cage be able to hold and how much surface area should each door be? Then the question remains how much surface area of gaming board am I willing to give up to reinforce the cage structure while still allowing near full range of of view

What scale would people suggest for citizens. I want the humans about 2/3 size of space Marines. When its not in use I want it to be a bustling city with lots of daily grim dark 40k universe and bionics. Lots of green stuff xD

This will probably take several months to complete but I'm in no hurry

So is this going to be like something that you walk on? I don't understand what the goal here is.

I'm not sure exactly what you're driving at here either. Perhaps a quick sketch or ms paint would help?

If the boards are going on the floor then what is the need for the steel cage? Is wood not cheaper and easier or perhaps just the floor itself??

If you are looking for a floating floor that you can crawl under to access hard to reach bits then 'hatch' is probably a better word than 'door'. Personally I'd make the hatches large intact buildings or impassable terrain like a mountain, lake or whatever.

Cover it in resin?

I'm lost.

Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.
Oli: But it fits through the doors, Look!

Yea sorry its finals week so I've been busy.

Anyways the idea is that it will be a display case you walk over. The cage is encapsulated in a clear resin. This is to distribute weight over a lager area yet still have the transparency to see the models underneath you. The cage itself will be 12" off the surface of the gaming board to allow larger models to be placed. I will make the hatches removable by pins so that a clear 1'x1'x8 boxed hatches to cover larger models as they trudge across the board.

The display case itself will be a grid of hatches that are big enough to place 1'x1' tiles and have access to the entire playing surface comfortably while holding the weight of 5 250lb men; not over one tile but the entire 8'x10 room.
