I am currently painting my first miniature and need to know how much to thin my paints, I'm using utherian grey (I think that's what it's called), agrax earthdhade, and white scar.

A cheap multi-reservoir mixing plate is a must for me. You can get them cheaply at any craft store. Unfortunately, the amount to thin can vary, but it is not much. Just put a small amount of paint into one section of the mixing plate and add a bit of water. The paint should flow and cover nicely. You can tell pretty easy when it is either too thick or thin, by globs covering the details or lack of coverage.

I do a 50/50 water mix with my paints, as it's easier to add another thin layer than it is to take off a thick layer.

It really depends on the paint and the pot. There is no magic formula, because even the same exact paint will vary pot to pot unfortunately. Most of the GW "Base" paints are quite thick and need more water as a general rule.

You can paint with mixtures as viscus as tinted water, but it requires a little more skill and practice, particularly on how much you load up on the brush and/or wipe off before applying to the model.

It does help to have a pallet. For going super cheap -- I use these:

Water is fine for a starting painter, but I have found over the years that using acrylic medium to thin instead makes the thinned paint more controlable.
