So I'm thinking of getting back into chaos space marines as my next project but I can't think of a colour scheme that will go with all the cult choices. That isn't black legion, I basically want to be able to play any legion with out having to make basic marines and cultists for each one.
My plan is to do all the cult troops in the colours they are meant to be, so needs scheme that will fit with all of them. I don't want black because I've just finnished deathwatch and space wolves who are a dark grey.

Any ideas would be awesome

What I did (Pre-Legion book), was I painted them in the Red Corsairs colors (Red armor, black trim), and then painted the left shoulder pad different colors based on their allegiance (Death World Forest = Nurgle, Thousand Sons Blue = Tzeentch, Pink Horror = Slaanesh, Balthasar Gold = Khorne)

And remember kids, death to the false Emperor!

This isn't a bad idea, then can fit it as x legion has hired them or something, my first chaos army (after stripping a terrible black and white mess)I had every squad a different colour to have them be a Renegade warband that was made up of loads of squads made up of different chapters.
I had too many to paint and was getting back into the hobby and knew I'd get bored painting one colour.

So I've pretty much come to the conclusion the conclusion that all the marines I'll do will be in the right colours but want to make it so all my tanks/fiends/drakes/brutes can all be one colour that's interchangeable with each legion so I can save on money and space. 18 heldrakes would take up most of my gaming room haha. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Should work fine, if you paint the vehicles in the blacks and dark reds and metallics of the Dark Mechanicus and model them appropriately then it's perfectly appropriate that they'd be lending their support alongside the different legions. I'm doing the same thing and even going so far as modelling my Warpsmiths like Mechanicus magi

Not dark red
Brown with spot of metal over red
And more brown so its basically just brown.
And then wash all the brass brown.
Then dip everything in brown
And dont matt, just matt with more brown.

Also, cultists, cos they repeat alot, do every colour for each copy, say the guy with the ball on a string,
So you have like blue red yellow green orange purple brown black and white,
Then just wash them with like 5 layers of brown with a couple of highlights in the middle.

Brown legion

Alternative idea: prisoners.
Orange for regular clothing and spot colors for looted stuff. Keeps them uniform enough for a cohesive theme, enough variation for pop and fits with whatever warband "liberated" them.

Well, I'd go for Black Legion and their colors (black, metal, gold).
Neutral in all ways.
