Evening guys,

Putting together a Solar Auxillia list and I like the idea of outflanking Leman Russ tanks to pop heavy infantry and armour. Is the Annihilator worth it? With a hull mounted Lascannon I only get 2 Lascannon shots (one twinlinked) on a fast tank.

I am thinking Vanquishers might be more useful as although they may not hit as often they should pen more.

personally id say no, the russ has much better options in HH, and you shouldn't be short on anti tank if playing auxilia

Really? Just out of curiosity, what antitank options do they have that are so common?

quad mortars
demolishers
dracosans
any of our super heavies
vanquishers
battle tanks aren't slouches

IMO, no. The problem is that the 40k annihilator depends on having its hull/sponson guns to make up for the weaker turret, and solar auxilia LRBTs only get to shoot while moving for a single turn. After that one turn you're either turning your tanks into static bunkers or firing snap shots with your hull gun, which really hurts their effectiveness.

I don't really like Laser Destroyers, Quad Mortars, Demolishers, Dracosans, any of our Superheavies (except the Shadowsword and the Valdor), or battle tanks because if it can't stop a flare-shielded Spartan it's useless in my meta.

That leaves me with Valdors, Shadowswords, Vanquishers, Primaris-Lightnings, and Thunderbolts in a pinch .... or anything that can get around the flare-shield, like outflanking Annihilators.

That said, Peregrine's point is well-taken, and I think Vanquishers are a better choice, though the lack of a way to twin-link or otherwise buff them (aside from an Auxilia Tank Commander who only works on one or two) really hurts them; at least the Annihilator's shot gets two tries.

EDIT: You could put a Tactical Command Section near a squadron of vanquishers to buff them, I suppose. *muses*

You can fire one weapon at full BS if you move, just like any other normal vehicle. Unlike IG LRBTs the solar auxilia LRBTs do not have the "heavy" type, so your only way to move and fire multiple weapons at full BS is on the one turn they get to be fast vehicles.

OK decided to try out 2 vanquishers with Lascannons and a Tank Commander. The turrets will get magnatised so I can slap some converted Lascannons in there and try them out if the vanquishers suck.

On the subject of russes are Multi Lasers better than Heavy bolters in 30k? Astartes get to save against both so is it just the wounding on 2's that make the difference?

I run a pair of outflanking Vanquishers myself with a Tank Commander and lascannons, so the turn they race onto the table they can really maul whatever needs to die.

As for multi-lasers, where possible I use them in place of heavy bolters, though for me it is less about what is more effective and more about sticking to a theme of this army running more on energy weapons than solid shot weapons unless they really need to.

I like outflanking tanks but a lot of the time whatever's in those Spartans needs to be unhorsed before turn 2-3, or it's already too late anyways, so I am leery of trying it.

Thankfully my club dosn't appear to have any spartans and most of the guys rely on rhinos. I think one chap has a Cerburus and thats about it for big tanks.

The good thing about the vanquisher is its range, get 2 (one as hq) and place them on opposite table sides and where ever tbe land raider goes it will expose a flank and bam, no flare shield
