Hey guys,

I've been wanting to get back into 40k or awhile now and just bought a Necron Battleforce.
So it comes with a ghost ark/doomsday ark, 20 warriors, 5 immortalsl/deathmarks.

So obviously I need a HQ to get some games going.. is it worth buying the start collecting box at this point, I'd get a Lord but I'd have 30 warriors, is that too much?
Alternatively I was thinking of getting a command barge because it comes with a Lord.

Basically my questions here are-
command barge or starter set?
If I get the barge do I build the command or annihilation and keep the Lord on foot?

Also.. with the units I have do I build the ghost ark or doomsday?
immortals or deathmarks?.. if I take immortals do I take Tesla or gauss, I've read that gauss is better but also that most of your army will have gauss so tesla might be best?

It's a lot of questions but I don't know much about necrons right now.

Any other future next purchase would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

Well, the meta has shifted a bit.
In the past I would have said the CCB. It's quite durable but it's damage output is quite low.
If you play Necrons, you want to play a Decurion.
There are some mandatory units in there like Overlord and Tomb Blades. The latter ones are really great, durable and high damage output.
If you play a Decurion, go for a Canoptek Harvest or two.

Go for the Adjudicator battalion. It's loads of fun and very strong. The models are nice too.

I guess i could go for the reclamation legion right now.. so I'd need an over Lord and tomb blades if I can remember. that would also answer if I should make immortals or not as I need them as well.

Immortals are worth their points and six Tombblades are better than three.
A Ghostark makes the Warriors more durable. You can never go wrong with one or two.

really appreciate the good replies.

So.. overlord on foot is better than command barge?

I think I'll go with immortals, 3 tomb blades to begin, ghost ark.. maybe some lychguard with shields because I love the models.

at what point level do I bother with fliers?

The command barge combined with relics makes your overlord one of the most durable units in the game - however it comes with a price and usually Necron lords lack the damage output to be worth that price. Annihilation barge is crap though, other than hordes or vehicles you won't kill anything with it and even against those you have more useful toys.

Ok thanks.

So that clarifies what I should start with. very slow list apart from blades but I guess they are necrons.

Tomb Blades are definitely necessary. One of the best units in the codex.
I'd recommend against going for Lychguard at this point. They're tough, yes, but also incredibly slow. You mentioned wanting more speed, so perhaps Wraiths. Add a Spyder to the Scarabs that came with the box and you'll have a Canoptek Harvest to throw into your Decurion.

Do you want to win or do you want some fun games? Same goes for your opponents.
Because Decurion is quite annoying to play against, and people who just want a good time with casual list will be frustrated to play against your army.

So - the ark - DONT GLUE DAMAGED NECRONS IN! First you will have easier time painting it - second - you can fit the big effing gun in their place - poof! instant doomsday ark!

Catacomb command barge - dont glue handhold for the lord in it and you'll have ability to swap CCB for annihilation barge.
The CCB is tough unit with great mobility, durability(read BRB about chariots) and need to choose its targets carefully(anything that can break 13 armor easily is not a good one!)

If you go decurion way - ya need immortals - if you like them to march on and get into that sweet rapid fire than gauss, if they sit in the back field guarding your objective or doomsday ark/annihilation barge than tesla is good since it doesnt need to be in 12".

Get deathmarks after your decurion - they're fun and good against monstrous creatures, and counter deepstrike and killing opponents deepstrikers on his turn(red the codex, and be ready to declare this thing, also warn opponents about it so no bickering will ensue)

Sword and shield lychguads need to get there somehow - but they are nice as backfield guards too(if you await some drops into your deployment) - if you don`t go over 5 models... Go for triarch praetorians if you want to get into the fight(jump infantry is love! jump infantry is life!).

Tomb blades - as said before me, get 6 - they're cheap and great unit(not to assemble and paint tough - thats a pain) get 3 with gauss and 3 with particle beamers - your only source of small blast`s - or go full blast frenzy for clearing hordes(keeps people on their toes, spacing models fearing being smallblasted) not gluing weapons/magnetizing is good too(dont take tesla on em, its a waste)

About the box with hq - get the barge, start collecting is good - but before you want the stalker(big model) dont take it.

Dont expect great durability from necron vehicles - penetrating hits will be your nightmare - so jink or be in cover - opentopped and some ap2 - and you explode on 5+, ap1 and its 4+.

And think something about the bases beforehand - warriors with their stance are awkward fit - so do some basing to compensate or reposition the legs(you`ll have 2 spare warriors in any other warrior box excluding that battleforce you got, experiment bending their legs in hot water - or cut at the knee and reglue crouching stance so the silver tide wont look so bland)
