Well with the new Traitor Legions rules out it's time to dust off the old pre-heresey DG army that's been boxed up for the past couple years. I know it won't really stand up to serious tournament lists, but it seems like a solid mid-tier army.

Death Guard Vectorium:

Lords of the Legion:
Mortarion (aka Demon Prince), Wings, Power Armor, Demon of Nurgle, The Black Mace, Gift of Mutation, ML2 - 325

Chaos Warband:
Typhus - 230
4 Termies, MoN, 4 Combi-meltas - 172
5 CSM, MoN, Plasma, Combi-plasma, Rhino - 150
5 CSM, MoN, Plasma, Combi-plasma, Rhino - 150
5 CSM, MoN, Plasma, Combi-plasma, Rhino - 150
5 Raptors, MoN, 2 Meltaguns, Combi-melta, Meltabombs - 145
5 Havocs, MoN, 2 Autocannons, Rhino - 145
5 Havocs, MoN, 2 Autocannons, Rhino - 145
5 Havocs, MoN, 2 Lascannons, Rhino - 165

Auxillary:
2 Spawn, MoN - 72

Total - 1849

Raptors and Termies (with typhus) Deep strike (into cover if possible) and melta stuff then be obsec and tough in your backfield, Havocs drive around and use relentless to Dakka stuff, Mortarion hops around trying to stay in 2+ cover and beats stuff up, spawn run around being tough and annoying, CSMs take objectives and stuff.

Looks solid.
But at the end of the day, I'd go for a Chaos Knight.

I like it. One thought: It might be worth dumping a terminator to get ML3 and a Spell Familiar for Mortarion there.

Yeah it does seem a little criminal for a CSM psyker not to have a familiar. Dropping a termie is prob the best way to make points, and it makes typhus plus the 3 termies look like 4 deathshrouds for Mortarion while they're on display. I'd prob use the extra for some squad upgrades rather than ML 3 though.

I didn't really notice until you mentioned it but yeah, Mortarion is getting really close to Knight prices. Not sure how to get a chaos knight into a DG vectorium. Renegade knight would be easy though

A Nurgle Daemon CAD would probably be the best way to get a Knight in

Hunting with the 13th

Nothing sucks quite like having Typhus not arriving until Turn 4. As such, I recommend possibly adding another spawn (dropping a termie) and then adding Typhus to the spawn unit to get him into combat early (or just use him as a backfield guard).

Otherwise, you can sub in a termie sorcerer for him (and use the same figure) and save 100+ points.

To be honest, Typhus coming in late wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing ever as it'd be that many fewer turns for my opponent to shift 8 T5 2+/5++ FNP obsec wounds. And while swapping him for a sorc is definitely sound advice, Typhus probably isn't going anywhere, even though I'm not using zombies, he's essentially the reason I started collecting DG.

Admittedly I'm not too concerned with squeezing every ounce of optimization out of the army. Personally I don't consider anything the DG have to be all that competitive (with the possible exception of the raptor talon, wildly unfluffy though it may be). Basically every DG army I've seen posted (including this one) just looks like a crappy battle company at the end of the day, trading a mild durability boost for fewer bodies/vehicles and significantly reduced damage output.

If we had access to Grav-cannons (or even multi-meltas) on our relentless marines/havocs, and could take 1 heavy per 5 CSMs then we'd be in business.

Your comments about the competitive potential of your list were very insightful; but a big secret to always having fun in 40k is having realistic expectations. Looks fun! And definitely rule #1

Rule #1 is Look Cool.
