I'm using super glue gel to glue some plastic models, and if I put a lot of glue in one place the surrounding area gets a residue and some of the fine detail is melted off the model.

As I'm new to this kind of modelling, I'm wondering if this is a common occurrence.

I'm in China using a local glue, which seems the same as the stuff in the UK, but thought this might be a factor.

Many thanks for any thoughts.

You really shouldn't need that much glue.
Make sure that you have good contact points and if necessary pin larger elements.

Why are you using super glue instead of plastic glue for plastic minis? Grab yourself some proper plastic glue and you should be fine then.

There are a few schools of thought on that.
Some people prefer to use superglue on plastic as it's easier to snap off the model when it's time to change weapon load outs between editions, changing out bases or if the pose needs a slight tweak. It's also cleaner for those painting in sub assemblies.
Also as the op has stated he was trying to use a pin on a plastic model, I assume it was metal although styrene rods are a usefulthing to have in your model kit.
Plastic glue is permanent and a bit of a nightmare to pull apart at a later date.
Personally I find a combination of both is a good idea. I tend to do the bulk of the model with plastic glue and arms and options with superglue.
