My space wolf army includes two Leman Russ tanks [named 'Thor' and 'Odin' respectively] It came to my attention recently that Space wolves can no longer use tanks named after their primarch and there are a few other armies which now have dropped and or OOP units. is it still legal for me to use these tanks or do I have to replace them with Astartes models. I'd hate to replace them, they were tricky to paint.

There must be some way to bring them in as allies (Fenris Planetary Defence/Chapter Serfs) or failing that count them as Predators.

Most OOP models are still usable, they just might not have the new hotness wargear or look quite as flashy as newer iterations of them. I still play a 2nd ed Space Marine army in 7th ed 40k after all, I just miss out on grav weapons.

As Kyoto said, you can ally in Imperial Guard to make it work. An allied detachment has a minimum requirement of 1 HQ and 1 Troops choice, so you could take a Guard veteran squad, a Commissar for them, and then take a Leman Russ squadron using those two tanks if you wanted to take the bare minimum of models. Alternately, you could build a small Guard detachment, or just houserule it if you're playing casually with your friends.

You don't even need an allied detachment - as i'm fond of saying the Cadian/Mont'Ka update gave us the Cadian Battle Group which can take 1+ HQ with no other requirements.

One of the Qualifying HQs is the Tank Commander, so you can have 1 bs4 tank and 1 bs3 tank as meat shield/body guard. Model it as one marine popping out the hatch and one scout from the other and you've even got fluff justification for their different profiles.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

My man! :-D 3rd Edition Space Wolves were the bestest.

I doubt you'd find too many people willing to let you use the old Codex, but like others have said, you can bring a Russ as part of an allied Astroglide Vomitarium (IG) detachment. If you want to bring two, you could always do a CAD with two Tank Commanders and a couple of cheap Vet squads as Troops. Paint them up as the Fenrisian PDF and use them as fodder.

Is the IG start collecting box not a Lemun Russ, 10 meat shields and a commissar? As others have said. Just say they are pdf
Or. Could you not have your SW as your main CAD detachment and have the two Lemun Russ as a HQ choice in a different unbound detachment? You would have at least one tank firing at BS 4 with all the other perks.

Oops. Sorry just realised I am duplicating malamis.

Most of my rulebooks and codex's are from the dawn of the new millenium [cant recall what edditions off the top of my head] and as such a good 90% of my armies have stuff in them which was either listed or stated in those books at the time. I dont want to wreck stuff i worked hard on just because future edditions made the Blood angels buddied with Necrons.

I just wasnt sure what do to at a local event if i turned up with Thor and Odin. Thanks for all the support

Between mont'ka and the armoured battlegroup list taking a couple of russes as allies is not a problem.

Whilst I don't disagree here I must point out Space Wolves Scouts are also veterans and not new recruits like other chapters so that particular modelling option wouldn't work. Change it to a Servitor or something and now you're golden.

Remember, you can always go unbound; it's the dirty looks you get for doing it you'll have to get over.

I don't want the best army, just one that isn't an exercise in picking up my models by turn 3.

It doesn't matter if you're not dominating the game; if you have 3-4 x as many models and options than the rest of us and you're still getting new kits, we're still gonna rip on the faction. If I had 100 + Drukhari kits all in plastic to choose from, or 100 + Sisters kits, I think I'd be more likely to be receptive to Space Marine player's complaints about anything.

To be fair, going unbound to add a pair of Russes to your list isn’t going to garner that much hate.

Unbound catches a lot of flack for the potential abuse it allows. "I want to add a pair of tanks named after my primarch to my old school SW army" is very mild. Especially considering that if he’s pulling from a collection that old, he probably doesn’t have wulfen, TWC, or any of the other latest hotness.

Even easier than that is to get a hold of the formation from the Start Collecting set.

-1x Leman Russ Battle Tank
-1x Infantry Squad
-1x Commissar

It will, as a formation, let your army retain its Battleforged status and be the cheapest way to bring in the LRBTs.
