This Is Where the Fish Lives

Bandai "Vehicle Model" Y-wing (1/144 scale) in Dex Tiree's "Gold Two" livery; completed in Tamiya & Vallejo acrylics, Mr Color lacquers, and Mig Productions enamels.

This is was a fun little weekend project! I started it late Sunday morning and finished it up Monday morning. Truth be told, it could probably stand to have a little more weathering, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. At 1/144 scale, this model is a little over 4" long and is about twice the size as the Y-wing from the X-Wing Miniatures game. Still, I still can't get over the detail on this kit; for something that fits in the palm of my hand, it's absurd! Comments and criticism is welcomed as always!

What criticism? A fine model, and great results from a speed build project. Sometimes it's just super satisfying to build a model.

Beautiful work, and arguably one of the most overlooked craft from Star Wars. Such a cool 'feel" to the thing.

Thanks mate!

Thanks!

I couldn't agree more about the Y-wing. It has always been my favorite starfighter and I think the description it's often been given (slow, aging fighter/bombers past their prime and outclassed by newer fighters) isn't accurate at all. I mean, why would you rely on the worst fighters in the fleet to pull off the one-in-a-million shot you only have one chance to do?

The Y-Wing has always been my favorite rebel ship as well and you did a great job on it.

As for the reasoning behind for why the rebels were using the Y-Wing for the kill shot it is because of there history as bombers. They were equipped with slightly better targeting equipment then the X-Wings giving them a slightly better chance of making the shot. They were still outclassed as a dedicated fighter though.

You can add one more vote to the "Y-Wing is underappreciated" list. I always liked the rough and sturdy look. and i liked how at the end of a new hope there was still a y-wing who made it through.

And you have done a wonderful paint job on it as well, of course.

realism is a lie

I always liked the Y-wing myself. The movie version, mind you, not the version seen in the Clone Wars show. You did a great job on that model!

More inspiring stuff as always, SPJ!

Is this a particularly hard kit to get hold of? I've managed to find both X-wings, the Falcon and Slave 1 in 1/144 (a much more manageable scale for me) but I can't find the Y-wing.

I got this from Amazon for about $10 about a month ago. I just checked Amazon.co.uk (search for "vehicle model y-wing") and they have it for 15£, which is a little pricey in my opinion, but I'm not sure how it compares to the other Bandai Star Wars kits for you guys on the other side of the pond.

Ah, found it... weirdly it didn't come up if I searched for Bandai specifically, all the others did. £15 seems a bit much when the X-wing is going for half that, but I'll keep an eye out.

I dunno... the more I think about it, the more it might be worth it just to have it in the display case!

I mean, look at this detail (it's a large picture so zooming in on it in the gallery will show it better):

That was before most of the weathering was done, just a light enamel wash on the main body. It's patently absurd what how small they can make some of these details!
