Hiya all. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth buying Possessed (yes yes, I know they're bad rules-wise) or if I should just buy generic CSM and convert. It's almost the same price for 5 models vs 10.

Are there extra bits that could be used for converting on the Possessed sprue or is just enough to make 5 models?

I got possessed bits as part of a battleforce box.

At that point I was not interested in this unit, and instead mixed in some of the pieces amongst regular marines to represent mutations. Despite this, I still had enough pieces remaining to make some reasonable looking possessed for my next chaos army (although I did have a few mutation and spawn sprues to help me stretch out my bits). I found it effective to model some of the possessed with a regular close combat weapon arm.

Googling Possessed Sprue gave he this result, which I hope will be useful to you:

I think, with spare bodies and legs (berserker ones are good for this, with all the chains), you can get at least 7 decent possessed marines out of the kit. More if you are willing to spread bits thinly!

I've used several boxes of Possessed as conversions for regular marines.

I like the idea of having broken armour and small mutations on generic Tactical marines but not full on possessed. Most of the bits are just trash and look terrible.

IMO the possessed box is quite dated. It came out during a time when GW was transitioning from hand sculpted to CAD sculpt and you can really see the difference in quality between now and then. The same thing with the plastic Daemon Prince. That model is terrible, but there are some salvageable conversion bits.

Long story short, GW has never released a good looking "possessed" box. If you look at any of the 3rd/4th edition boxes they look god awful especially the fantasy Forsaken models they produced like 3 years ago. The only ones worth looking at are the Gal Vorbak from Forgeworld.

I nabbed just the arms off ebay, and kitbashed with regular CSMs, even getting all 4 gods properly represented.

But, the old Shoulder pads dont quite fit on Possessed arms, so it requires a bit of cutting and filing.

I still have extra bitz left over, that ive used to represent Sorcerer Force weapons, Lightning Claws, and toothy crab claw champions.

I've got a bucket of Chaos Spawn bitz. I've more eye balls, tentacles and claws than anyone could ever use.

Try looking around for some of them. They're great for converting possessed.

As you can see they don't exclusively use the possessed kit, but I think they work well enough.

I rather like the possessed box, also got them as part of a battleforce back then. It has some useful bits to spread out in your army. They have the same problem as most chaos boxes though: They are rather generic, if you want to focus on a specific god there's not much in there.

Yea, I found the warped vox casters/mouth pieces on the helmets were great for noise marines, the chunky chest plates good for chaos lords, the weapons for characters and so on.

I dislike the possessed box because I think the nature of possessed is that everybody's possessed should be uniquely chaotic. I can't stand the idea of ranks upon ranks of identical mutants. The same goes for the spawn.
So I say make your own! Be creative!

Thanks everyone for your info. I have hundreds of leftover bits from my Tyranids, all sorts of claws, lash whips, etc, I just didn't want them to look too obviously Tyranid when attached to some CSMs. The look of the Possessed sprue is dissapointing. There's 1 extra head, 2 extra arms, and 2 extra power packs (the wings) and that's it. I need 20 possessed for the Word Bearers list I want to build so I may just buy a box of Berserkers and convert all of my possessed with greenstuff and Tyranid bits.
