Hi I have am thinking of woriking the planet strike missions into a narrative campaign and just read that the defender can take as much fortifications as he wants (not paying pts) and the attacker can in exchange make D3+nr of building S9AP3 Large blast marker shots the first turn...

Is this really playable? or is this as OP as I think it is and does the attacker not really stand a chance in a let us say 2500 pts game.
I know the attacker gets benefits too but this seems a bit pro the guy that spends a 1000 $ on scenery.

Just think of someone taking multiple void shield generators (Good luck with those blast markers) with a large complex of defensive scenery multi covered by it.

Would I make it a bit TFG -proof by adding that you can only take 1 of each scenery piece unless it is part of the same complex? Or is that void relay complex already going to ruin the fun in these missions?

I really have not much experience with fortifications so any input is welcome.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

As someone who has played a planetstrike game, believe me, the defender needs those fortifications. Charging out of deep strike is a massive game changer: my daemon army tide up most of his units, destroyed a couple of my opponants tanks and blew up a bastion he was hiding in, all before he could even shoot back.

The defender can take as many VSG as he wants but that won't save him from your assault.

Hey, if your using a none cc army or an army with no deepstrike then it may still be a nice house rule to introduce.

It doesn't work at all unless everyone is willing to work together to make a reasonable scenario. If you just play it RAW and allow the defender to do whatever they want to win they can literally cover the table in impassible terrain and automatically win the game. To make it work you either need to set a fixed budget for the defender to buy fortifications (on top of the normal terrain you'd be using) or have a third player arrange something that seems reasonable as a defensive position.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Unless the defender is a WAAC tfg, in which place why are you even playing them, then the trade off is fine as I am sure your opponant will be curtious enough to not be a total asshat.

Thanks for the feedback, I am now thinking of filling a box with terrain that can be used, so that they have to make due with that. That way we will be able to adjust the powerlevel of the box for everyone in the campaign at the same time without letting it get OP.

Any ideas on how much is enough in a 2500 pts game?

If the table is filled with impassable terrain, then they also can't place models nobody is going to do that, nobody.

I've played over a dozen planestrike missions in the past couple of years, it has never been an issue. Just make sure the attacker builds their army accordingly. It's times when someone builds a tank (especially skimmer heavy) list that they start having trouble.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Seeing all these different reaction I am getting curious to get these games in.
I am gonna see what the first few games in my club give, to see the effect on this specific playgroup and only fix if necessary (with or the box fixed terrain or limiting to one unless it is part of a complex) .
