Subject: Daemons and Summoning - how many citizens of the maelstrom do you need?

So still getting back into 40K and quite liking the idea of a Chaos Daemon army but I know one of the biggest strengths of the army is being able to summon more Daemons. I'm not 100% sure how many I would actually need and how I would go about it. Do you design a list just to summon more and more daemons or do you have a list which can do a lot of stuff and then summons more things to turn things even more into your favour?

There are four different types of Daemon list:
- A list where you run none psykers, probably a Khorne only list.
- A list where you bring psykers to buff your main units and maybe fire out a couple of witchfires/maledecations if you have them but your not really looking to waste WC on summoning.
- A list where you have summoning as a back up power if you need some distraction units, blocking units or a unit to grab an objective.
- A list, usually at low point levels, where you bring a list that is nothing but psykers that you will use to summon your attacking army.
Each of these lists have different numbers Daemons required to be sitting in your case... just in case. Decide what kind of list you want to run and then we can help you with how many you want to keep in reserves.

Ooh! Didn't know there was such variety with the lists now (guessing with new formations and how the game has evolved I'm silly for not knowing that). I would probably prefer to go with Summoning as a backup power as I would like to have a good list that can operate without the need of summoning just in case things go wrong
I've not actually thought too much about the list as looking at it as bit of a painting project for 2017. Sort of thinking about either getting a couple of the Nurgle start collecting boxes and some other stuff and taking it from there, but I have been tickled by GoatBoys Flying Circus list which fits into the quirky lists I like playing.

If you're going with Summoning as a back up I would only have maybe 1-2 units of either Nurglings, great for holding objectives in cover with a 2+ save, Daemonettes, great for holding off MCs with their rending attacks, or Pink Horrors, a unit that gives you extra WC while it sits on an objective (but be warned you will have to buy 2x as many blue and brimstone horrors to run these guys). Bloodletters have ap3 but most of your army has ap2 so meh.
Some advice to you, go with Nurglings as your back up. Pink horrors are insanely competitive but no one wants to deal with the split rule, not even Daemon players.

I usually try to summon 1 unit per turn if I can. So my tactic is to own a few extra units from each conjuring power. -Summoning: Daemonettes, Pink Horrors, Flesh Hounds, occasionally Flamers are all good choices. Never Summon Nurglings. Plague Bearers are better in every way for Summoning. Nurglings are best as your actually Troops. -Sacrifice: Pretty much always a Tz Disc Herald. Have 1-2 extra of these -Incursion: I like Plague Drones here as they cost the most (so you get the most for free), they have a 2D6 move in the assault phase so they can get into cover and they are the toughest unit of the Incursion choices. -Possesion: Personal preference here. SInce Horrors can no longer use Malefic, I don't see this power being a priority. -
