Merry Christmas everyone!

So, I was at my local game store a few days ago and came across some guys explaining the mechanics of 40k to another guy. I eavesdropped for a bit then stayed to watch the guys doing the explaining play a game. They were very pleasant and extremely patient with me and my insightful questions such as, "Hey, what does that dude do?" and "Why all the dice?".

Kidding aside I've been passingly familiar with 40k, but never took the plunge to invest in this hobby. I have to say I think watching how much fun they were having has got me hooked, though. My interwebs searching has brought me here a lot so I thougth I would join up and say hello. Now, which army to build?

Cheers!

First of all, welcome to Dakka Dakka!

The 40k universe has many fun and exciting factions to chose from. Since these players at your local shop seem to enjoy the game so much,
I would suggest picking their brains regarding which faction suits your play style, but most of all, which one you find the the most interesting. It sounds as though they might be quite helpful. After all, your are going to to be assembling and (ideally) painting a lot of models in the near future, so you want to be sure that part of the hobby is as enjoyable as possible.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy the hobby as I have, and make many great friends through your involvement in it.

Also, merry Christmas!

Welcome to 40K!

It is an awesome hobby and game. For what army you want to play, I suggest go with the army you like the looks of the most. I know it sounds silly, but the aesthetics of the models will keep you more interested in the hobby in the long run.

I've been in the hobby for 3 years now and I have never regretted my decision of the Space Marines.

If aesthetics do not matter, perhaps factors such as playing style or lore might sway you to an army you will like.

If the lore interests you more than have a look at this: warhammer40k.wikia.com/

You can pretty much read everything and anything about the factions. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Welcome to Dakka and 40k! As far as picking your (first) army, browse through them all and see which ones "speak" to you more. Are you into Imperial righteousness or maybe military laden lore and discipline like UltraMarines? Maybe more of a "green tide" Orc WAAGGHH of rage, maybe the creepy crawlies of the Nurgle faction of Chaos is more your thing?

Everything above and more are there for you to check out. As said above, you will be spending a lot of time modeling them then looking at them on the tables or your desks, so aesthetics can be as important of a part as their actual talents. Good luck and welcome to the WH and Dakka families.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
