Ok, so I'm starting up a 30k/40k Salamanders army, so far I've got some forgeworld stuff (Vulkan, the character venerable dreadnought "Bray'arth Ashmantle"/"Cassian Dracos", and the "legion support cadre" pack - a salamanders contemptor dread, 5 pyroclasts, and 5 firedrakes)...and then I've just got a bunch of assorted second hand space marines/a couple of vehicles that all need stripping and a good bit of modelling work...but, getting to the point of this thread now, I have about 40-odd old RTB01 beakie marines (half need stripping, half are on sprue), which I was thinking of using for my 30k/40k tac squads.

so, due to the vast difference in detail, as well as a fairly small, but easily noticeable size difference, I'm a little unsure of how the old beakies will look next to the new fancy forgeworld stuff, and just generally any new 30k/40k kits I'll be adding to the army...

what's everyone's opinions on having an army containing models from such different eras? all good? too goofy to work?

also, if you don't think they'd work at all, any alternate ideas as to what I could use 40-odd beakies for?

Go for it! Those are old enough that they are kinda cool. What's the word now? Vintage? lol.

There is some scale creep, but it’s doable. I put together some new Mk VI marines to give an old RTB01 squad some new life.

thanks guys - though I've seen you both around here a fair bit now and you've both always seemed pretty cool about stuff like this, so I'm not too surprised that you've both got my back on this one

...kinda surprised there hasn't been any naysayers here yet though

@Nevelon - huh, y'know, I don't think I'd actually ever seen a current-model full-corvus dude next to an old beakie before until now...they actually blend together in a unit surprisingly well!

...so, currently I'm assuming that using the old beakies as regular bolter grunts, next to the fancy forgeworld/current model elite/specialist units is going to be ok then?...assuming they're all painted/based to match as a cohesive force?

I'm far from an expert on 30k stuff, but MKVI came fairly late into the 30k setting right?...so maybe it kinda makes sense to have the regular bolter grunts as "the new guys", in their newer MKVI armour, next to the more veteran elite/specialist units in their more decorative, older marks of armour...that'd be a fair enough explanation for it to make it work, right?

Old Beakies would be awesome. Space Marines seem to love their relics I myself just ordered one of the old metal Whirlwinds off eBay to use as a sort of center piece for my marines

They are more than appropriate for marines. Especially as veterans.

EVERY one of their suits and weapons is considered a "holy relic" and all are venerated, the older the moreso.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I'd personally say no, it'd definitely look very weird (at least in full squads), however dotting them about the place, combined with painting talent, is sure to negate this.

Another alternative is to make them into a Kill Team/Skirmish Army, where they can shine on their own as classic miniatures.
