Lascannon is way too expensive for kill teams and a one shot weapon is a poor choice. For space marines, I would say scouts, sternguard, tac. marines in that order. Scouts are the most points efficient and sternguard are elite and versatile with their special ammo. It all depends on what you are going up against. I have even used a unit of bikes but I knew there wouldn't be any "horde" kill teams.

I'm very new to this game but the thought of building small kill teams is very interesting. How many points is a traditional small KT game?

Hey; Kill team with space marines is fairly simple: Scouts are by far the most points efficient unit. always consider taking the recon boys. Tactical Squads bring the numbers that a Sternguard squad will not. Special Ammon makes the veterans more aggressive; but they take exactly the same amount of effort to kill. just a factor to bear in mind. in sternguard squads, you don't want to be upgrading past combis. otherwise you lose out on the spec ammo. Rhinos, YMMV. personally I feel my tacticals are durable enough at this points level. the need for mobility will be determined by mission, and density of terrain, which should traditionally be VERY high. if taking tacticals; I'm yet to have a reason brought up against me why the Imperial Marine is illegal. a free S5 AP2 Instant Death gun? yes please! just be sure to make him your preferred enemy dude to override gets hot... heavy bolters are available to tacs, stern and scouts. with reaping volley these become a dependable source of ass kicking, being able to split their 3 S5 shots. oh yeah... lose the lascannon. that's 1/10th of your combat force, without a marine to man it. that hits 2/3rds of the time... and there will always likely be cover.....bad bad bad move my son... all I got for ya for now?

One of the best kill teams I saw were:
5 Tacticals
1 special/Heavy bolter with eagle eye/+BS
5 Scouts
Possibly
Rhino or Sternguard
Never seen a rhino or stern guard in kill team, sternguard should fare well, but loyalist seldom need a rhino at all. Their chapter tactics make up for it. In terms of specialists, you must have a close combat specialist to help you hold down some cqc danger (Warriors, Vanguard etc.) The heavy bolter sits high up taking down transports (yes he can). Your cqc spec dude safe guards your leader not to let him claim an extra point. Scouts and geavy bolter pin down the enemy to let your forces approach and destroy them.
