Subject: Taboo-BBC series with Tom Hardy and copious murderfication
That's a fair cast, and has a degree of crossover with the Peaky Blinder's production crew; so its not dead in the water.
As for as premise - a standalone story would be appreciated. We already have one show with the Jack the Ripper namesake, that unfortunately was a bit of a red herring however to initially attract viewers.

Saw the first episode, interesting, but starting to get boring. I need more Hardy talking/killing and less walking around looking like a wannabe tough. Will watch one more episode.
Wife had to put on the captioning, you couldn't understand what people were saying.
-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
-"Don't mind Frazzled. He's just Dakka's crazy old dude locked in the attic. He's harmless. Mostly."

I'm rather enjoying it - The characters are interesting to me, and I don't feel like I know how it's all going to end, so it has my interest. I'm looking forward to episode 3, and I'm hoping to learn a bit more about Hardy's occult abilities. I think he's quite a cool character, I don't really feel like I've seen a similar character before - the whole shamanistic/hardman/antihero/prodigal son mixture.
I think it's the first "period drama" / "costume drama" I remember being interested in - It's blown Poldark out of the water anyway!
Episode 2 was fun. Looks like we have a crew developing! The pacing is slow by modern standards, but fits the setting well, I think, and maps well to the style of gothic literature it emulates. I love the tie ins to the historical politics.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this. The overall tone of the show is gripping; and the pacing feels right to keep both a methodical advancement and maintain an air of suspense and subterfuge. And things haven't devolved into overly predictable "TV show plots" that detract from the story. It feel more like a large film split into a series than an ongoing show that has no real end game to it.
For me, this feels like Penny Dreadful done right. I lamented the way that show turned out after the way the first episode/pilot's atmosphere and tone were presented. There were the filler episodes and plots gave it a very "This is a TV show" sense to it, with the mystery and suspense replaced with a feeling that unknown information will just be plopped out in front of the viewer. This is feeling much closer to the way the first 2-3 seasons Game of Thrones was presented before the writing watered down a bit and things felt more like a typical TV show.
My only concerns are how the conclusions will be handled, a potential drop in plot quality, and if there will be a second season. Judging by clips in the trailer, I'm a little worried about a "climactic" action scene that might be made in an unnecessary way for the sake of having an action scene. I'm only worried about a second season because I don't want there to be an unneeded sequel created for it's own sake either. If it works with the plot, yes, otherwise let this stay as a single shot, quality mini-series.
