Subject: Legion Codices - Is this the next step?
|

Here me out here, would this not be the next logical step?
Beware, wild speculation appears!
We had the Alpha in Black Legion, Beta in KDK, and a prototype template for the return of legion rules in Traitor Legions.
Why do I think this is the next viable step?
GW has been listening. They've been working towards Chaos feeling unique for each legion, they've got pretty powerful Codices for normal SM and are showing plans ahead for. Similar handling of Imperial scum.
KDK introduced the Flesh Hound w/o Daemonic instability at a reasonable cost allowing for the dreaded Bark Bark Star. Absolutely this codex had issues, but overall this was a great boost to CSM as a whole (competitive or otherwise).
Additionally KDK and Age of Sigmar provided some new fresh plastics for the modeling community meaning. With that supplement it would mean KDK could hold while writing the other Gods books.
Could something else be in the works for the other Chaos gods?
Tzeentch Screamers would work, and provide what the TSons are missing in Fast Attack options. This actually makes sense why they didn't make a new model for Fast Attack option in TSons.
Slaanesh could get a boost to point cost for extra wounds on their Seekers (though I'd suspect some changes to chariots in addition or instead of the above). Additionally we could see Boom Box Rhinos, or Starscream Heldrakes.
Nurgle already feels very fleshed out overall comparatively but we could see some Beast of Nurgle or Plague Drone action. Imagine a Chaos Lord mounted on a Plague Drone, perfect delivery unit for an otherwise slow but powerful HQ choice.
Chaos Daemons would still exist seperately for their unique HQ choices, and to utilize multiple Chaos Gods units in a single army.
Going this route (ie. 4 books on the Gods working with CSM, Codex dealing with Legion rules, and future supplements dealing with new formations that can apply to all of it) would have the potential to provide a less expansive library of rules, or at least allow more centralized rules to specific playstyles.
Alternatively, or in addition to, we could even see a new Daemon codex specify that Daemonic instability rules don't apply to armies with a mark that matches the daemons god allegiance. This would be a simple edit and allow supplements in the future to still be flavoured individually.
Since GW is investing so much into Tzeentch this month (Tzaanuary) and last, could this be foreshadowing what 8th Edition will bring to Chaos Legions as a whole?
Could we see seperate Codices for each individual legion, or consolidate Chaos into 4 seperate books allowing future supplements to apply to all CSM's no matter the flavour?
What do you guys think?

I think you're 100% right in that they were testing the waters with KDK. The next logical step is to mix Deamons back into CSM in one giant CHAOS book and complete the ritual to end mankind once and for all. I mean in all the artwork, lore, and fluffy fun times the deamons are fighting with the CSM so why is it so annoying to mix the two? Just let us take it all!

I would truly like to see big books released in this manner:
Imperium of Man (all SM Chapters, IG, SOB, Mechanicum, etc)
Chaos (CSM, Daemons, Renegades, etc)
Xenos (All alien races, including Orks, Tau, Eldar, etc)
Boom, that's it. These would be hefty tomes, but I would actually be fine paying $100 each, as there is so much value for the customer there. Do I think it will ever happen? Not a chance.

honestly I think CSMs are in a fantasiuc place right now with traitor legions. what IMHO is needed is for some expansion of the other one god armies. nurgle is in a great place right now, really all it needs is plastic plague marines. I'd like to see a little bit added for the emperor's children too.

I had been speculating this for a while. IMO so what ever you want to take that for, its gonna go down like this.
you will get 4 factions from this
Destruction, Chaos, Imperium, Xeno Federation*
Destruction will contain orks, nids, and possibly necrons all working to the semi same goal of pure destruction, possibly dark eldar
Chaos, pretty self explanatory there
Imperium, again, take it at face value
Xeno federation, i think some sort of evnt will happen were tau, Eldar, will unite and possibly dark eldar not sure where dark eldar fit here.
I would greatly look forward to it, and as for the legions i think thats whats gonna happen, chapters will be a thing of the past, save for the fan favorites, but then everything is going back into legions which is going to be freaking awesome.

Thousand sons do technically still have access to bikers and raptors they just didn't decide to do a specific thousand sons bike or raptor kit. Just like they didn't do a specific kit for us. I'd sooner we don't get our own codex as we will probably lose chosen Havocs obliterators among other units

TS has access to a lot of things but unfortunately the mark is expensive and doesn't do a lot for anything that doesn't already have a Invulnerable save. A circumstantial 6+ on bikes, CSM, Raptors, etc. isn't worth enough for the points compared to other marks. You'd require a blessing on to many units to get it down to 5+ w/o any RR.
If the MoT provided the Daemon save or a +1 to invulnerable saves that already exist I could see that. Hell even if it added Daemonic Instability (Tzeentch) it would make them even more interesting.
I could very well see one big book for each, but I think it would be difficult to provide a book that would feel congruent on the Xenos side of things. I think the BRB will do something like the 4 way, but we will still see focused releases on codices and supplements as the market already has indicated it will buy that format. Why cut your revenue stream more than you have to?
Though anything is possible.

yeah I'd rather not see then split things up too much, we've seen it inevitably cuts down on choices. rI'm of the opinion that chaos is in a great place. some legions could stand for some new toys (iron warriors could, for example, benifit from some sort of siege gun) but other then that,,,
