I was thinking if it was ok to use proxy special characters in games and tournaments. Not the 'old 2nd edition ork 'counts as' Thrakka variety', I mean a miniature which has been heavily customised to resemble that model. I have a khonre berserker I turned into Kharn as I cant afford the new Kharn model. Is it ok to use him as Kharn?

Depends on your opponent and/or tournament rules.

As with all questions of this nature: Check with the people you play against.

For the most part, the Rule of Cool covers a lot of sins, and as long as it’s basically WYSWYG, most people won’t have an issue with it.

That said, some people might. So YMMV.

Try wording it differently to your opponent/TO. "I know there is a Kharn model that exists, but I don't like it and I made my own. I made sure he was WYSIWYG". All but the biggest jerks will be okay with that.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I agree with the above. You would be fine on our tables, as long as you have made him look a bit spiffier than the average zerker. Some people might not like it so check beforehand. Most of my group rarely buys the specific figure for a named character. We all enjoy the process of converting more, so I hear you.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

WYSIWYG and Rule of Cool are enough to get most people to go along with just about anything.

If you've kitbashed your own Kharn out of a Khorne Berserker, I don't think you're going to have problems.

I've got a Vulkan He'stan I made myself out of various bits, and I've never had anyone say boo about it in three editions of gaming. (Barring one guy, whose objection was that his cloak only had scales painted on it rather than textured in, and thus it 'wasn't WYSIWYG.' He was laughed at by the TO.)

As long as it's obvious from typical viewing distances and you inform your opponent, I don't see a problem with it.

(Ditto for the opposite - I'm fine with saying "I'm using the Kharn model as my Chaos Lord with the Mark of Khorne" or using Gaunt as a generic Lord Commissar as long as it's clear.)

As long as it is obvious, and WYSIWYG, anyone who has a problem should be told to promptly... well I think we all get the point.

The model should also roughly be proper in dimension of what you are trying to proxy too. An example, before the plastic model came out, there was no hydra kit save for forgeworld. I used Rhinos with autocannons from the aegis defense line in the turret ring. To me thats okay, as it is the proper *stuff* on it, and roughly the right size, of a model that isn't going to really gain much from being smaller.
