Hi all! Ever since FFG announced the new DOOM board game, I had been very excited to get my hands on a copy and play it - mainly because I love LOVE Doom 1 and Doom 2 (I still follow the very active modding community) and Doom 4 from earlier this year was fantastic. So one of my buddies got it for me for Christmas, and a bunch of my friends and I played it over the holiday. Not only is the game a ton of fun, but the miniatures are spectacular - easily the best board game miniatures I've seen and definitely rivaling some of the professional released miniatures from some other companies.

DOOM is here - https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/doom/

So anyways, I shared my work in progress pics with my friends and they said I should make a post, so here goes.

And I apologize in advance for the crappiness of several of these pics, the recent "update" to Facebook Messenger on Androids kind of crippled the functionality of the built in photo-app and that's what I primarily use to send pics to my pals.

Minis primed white! I decided to prime white, as I knew I would be doing a quick paint job on these guys, consisting of constantly mixed pink to flesh to brown to grey tones, heavily diluted with Vallejo Thinner Medium. It just makes painting models that are mostly organic, super easy.

First base colors down. Instead of going with the "official" Doom The Board Game color schemes for the Marine squad, I instead paid homage to Doom 1 and Doom 2's DOOM Marine - single color armor, with an off-white helmet and grey visor.

I also decided to limit myself to about 3 to 4 colors per model. Some, like the imps, are only two.

Spoiler:

After basecoating, everyone got a wash of Army Painter Quick Shade Dark Tone - from the can. Just brush it right on 'em.

Spoiler:

24 hours later, I sprayed 'em with Army Painter Anti-Shine.

All in all, about 6 hours of work so far. I have to finish the bases, which I'll probably do tonight when I get home from work. Just trying to decide if I should paint the bases a solid color or if I should do some sort of basing. The game has both UAC Facility and Titan's Realm / Hell tiles, so I wouldn't want to base for only one terrain type.

I'll post totally finished pics this weekend!

Great work on these, Doug. It's super effective!

What's the game like in practice? Especially compared to the previous FFG edition.

Thanks dude! The helmets on the Possessed Soldiers or the helmets on the UAC Marines?

I based the possessed soldiers on a three color paint scheme based on the ones in DOOM (2016) video game.
Spoiler:

As for the UAC Marines, I based them on the original DOOM / DOOM 2 "Doom Marine" as an homage. Solid color armor, but grey-beige helmet

Thanks man! The new DOOM game is nothing like the original FFG DOOM board game. The new one plays like DOOM 4. The rules are super simple, too.

The quick run down is that initiative order is different every turn, with each Marine getting his own initiative but also each monster type getting their own. Each marine has a hand of action cards that has 4 basic marine cards and then 3 for each weapon you're carrying. Your hand is usually 3 cards. During your turn you can play main action cards from your hand that give you speed and an action (usually blastin'), and add more secondary action cards that could give you more speed or more demon-killin' actions. During an enemy's turn you can play reaction cards as well. Picking up a new weapon adds the weapons' cards to your hand (on the top of your draw deck, too), as well as items like hologram generators and grenades. When your deck runs out, you reshuffle the discard and keep going. Some cards have a combo (like heavy assault rifle can fire and it's like "if you have another of this card in your hand, you can play that too" and just unload on some demon jerks) Some turns you'll go through half your deck from actions and defense. BTW, every card also has a defense value; when you get beat on, you just draw a card from the top of your draw pile to see how much damage you block. (If you have cover - btw, imperial assault LOS rules but better cover rules), you can draw another card if you don't like the first one). Everyone has hit points. When a marine takes 10 damage, they're fragged, and teleport back in next turn. But there's health packs lying around. Enemies have hit points as well, and a stagger value - and if the enemy has enough damage on them to equal their stagger value, you can walk on top of them and Glory Kill them for free, gaining back hit points and special one-use bonuses. So you might shoot an imp who has 3 hit point, cause only 1 point, but their stagger value is 1, so then you use your movement to walk over to him and kill him with your bare hands. (The chainsaw reduces stagger values, so you can literally just walk through a horde of badguys cutting them apart for free). It's super, super fast, and super, super fun. We've played the first couple missions, so far the invader objective is like "get 2 frags" while the marines have been "kill all the baddies". But there's two campaigns, each six missions long, and a couple mission/objective/theme decks of cards that can vary stuff up. Marines can also get upgrades, and there's tons of them, so like I was Squad Leader which let me have a +1 hand size, and I could also discard cards in my hand to give other marines extra movement on their turn. The tiles are double sided, as half the missions are on UAC facilities, the other half are in Titan's Realm / Hell. And as you can see, there's only about half the DOOM enemies in this game, so I'm eagerly awaiting the first expansion which would obviously have Hell Knights, Arch Viles, Hellrazers, Possessed Security, Hell Guards, Lost Souls, Summoners, Spider Mastermind, etc.

whew, TL;DR - it's awesome.

I'm not that big of a DOOM fan, but these models look awesome, after you painted them. Makes me want to find a use for them.

I suggest grabbing ZDoom https://zdoom.org/ and buying the wads from GOG - https://www.gog.com/game/the_ultimate_doom

It'll be the best purchase of your life
