I know I've seen it somewhere, but I don't know in which faction or in what unit it belongs to: it's a small skeleton "animal", I think the look suggests it to act as a pet from a figure/character. About the size of a normal 28 mm figure, looks like the skeleton of a baby dragon, it has a leash and a chain too. It's from Games Workshop, but that's about all I know.....

Anybody recognise my description?

Sorry no, but I know Reaper has baby dragons if you end up empty handed.

Have you tried a search on Stuff of Legends?

Doesn't ring a bell for me otherwise, I'm afraid.

Are you positive it was a familiar Games Workshop produced? Their line of familiars was actually pretty small.

The thing about familiars is that any scale model could be used if it's small enough so it's hard to determine if what you saw was actually GW. Their dragon here isn't a skeleton, and it doesn't have a leash, but I'm pretty sure it's the only baby drake they made specifically for pets/fams. It may have just been a model from a boxed game or separate kit altogether that was used as a familiar:

Mantic has a skeleton dog (or is it a rat) on a leash with chains. Could that be what you're thinking of?

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
