Currently i've got a small 1250 skitarii army, pretty basic and it's listed at the bottom of the post. I know cult is the obvious choice, but i've got a theme in mind and I'd like to round it out with an ally that brings in transports. I know with the faq they can't start in them, but first turn embarking will have to do, i'm guessing it's worth the risk to get the vanguards up faster and more effectively.
I'm building the army around an "ordo xenos inquisitor who came from the mechanicus" theme, having just finished Eisenhorn and having a big hard on for inquisitors. So the obvious choice is to include an inquisitorial ally, though i'm also considering the alternative of using tempestus militarum as the ally for transports in addition to a lone inquisitor from IA.
I've been weighing the pros and cons, so some advice would be welcome.
Inquisition Detachment
-Tax is cheep just 2 squads of 3 acolytes
-Chimeras are cheaper than taurox with more armor
-Already bringing an inquisitor so one less detachment, if that matters
tempestus militarum CAD
-2 scion squads with 2 melta guns each, more expensive but actually a useful 'tax' deep striking in to hose armor.
-Taurax dishes more damage than the chimera on it's own, and it's fast so it can get the vanguards in range faster after embarking.
-Commissar as the hq feels fluffy as one of the inquisitors retinue, and being able to pass leadership tests with shooting a cheap vanguard isn't terrible (sorry i love having a fluffy story to an army)
Overall the inquisitorial only detachment is much cheaper, and the chimera arguably better, but the tax acolytes are essentially just chaff to sit around. It does leave more points open for other things. The scion squad on the other hand seems like it would actually bringing some damage and utility instead of just transports. the point difference is about 170-200 depending on camo nets or not, so not insignificant. That could be another squad of infiltrators.
