Subject: How to get started back into the hobby?

I want to start playing Warhammer 40k again, but the last time I played I got bored with my army and my lack of motivation to paint.
This time I want to play a different army, which I can perhaps update every month with a new unit or model. I have no quarrels which faction I go with, as long as it isn't the Tau Empire.
Or, the other option is to continue the Tau Empire, but find some means of motivation.l
Any advice?

Figure out why you lost motivation to paint last time, and don't get an army that will have the same problems that caused your lack of motivation. I might recommend Daemons, as at least there's plenty of variety in what units they can field, so lots of different ways to paint.

What was it you didn't like about Tau?
Was it their boring mecha robots? Try a different aesthetic (such as Orks, Chaos or Nids)
Their boring gun lines style game play? Play Genestealer cults
Are you tired of upsetting everyone with an OP army? Change your play style/don't take OP units.

The new Traitor Legions (Deatguard or World Eaters) or Space Wolvesl. Make a strong list with formations and evil stuff that you like, try it out and tone down to suit the gaming group.

The best way to play 40k is choose an army that you like the look of the models or you fall in love with the background. Painting them is going to be what you want to make of it.
That said, Tau really are one of the easier armies to paint. They tend to be 2 colors and large flat surfaces. Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Necron are probably the only easier armies to paint.

Daemons have always intrigued me - they seem so cool. It just seems like they're not a viable choice for an army that wants to, well, win... Automatically Appended Next Post: Rippy wrote:What was it you didn't like about Tau?

Believe me, I hardly ever upset anyone, because I didn't play an OP army - in my opinion. Generally consisted of a number of Fire Warrior Squads, a single Crisis Team, and a Riptide or Broadside depending on points. Often I used a Stealth Team as well. I'd like to stay away from Space Marines. I have no quarrel towards them, but I have played as them before my Tau. Whilst I agree with both points, the second stands out more to me. Tau may be one of the easiest armies to paint, but when you have no motivation or patience to paint, it can be quite hard.

Strictly speaking with painting being the limiting factor then, I'd say go with Eldar, Dark Eldar, or Necron to be honest. All 3 will look fairly well with a lighter undercoat and several layers of ink to bring out the detail. A different color helmet or a few bits and bobs and you're pretty much done.

Daemons are tied with Eldar for best army in the game
