Greetings Murderers, scoundrels, fear mongers, dwellers of darkness and warriors of the long war.
I have been playing Nurgle Csm marines and word bearers for about 3 years now and with the release of traitor legions I have decided to start a night lords army.
Do we have any dedicated night lord players that would share their wisdom with those who have only found the darkness?
To start things off I put together a list (I have over in army lists also) that I feel is fluffy and could fight at a somewhat competitive level.
So take a look and post your own ideas, tactics and lists!
Ave Dominus Nox!

I think your lords got one too many veteran of the long wars, lel.
Is that an 1850 list or a 1105 list?

Why plasma guns and melta bombs on the CSM?
Why the large units of bikers?
Why plasma on the Chosen?
Who's going with what? Are the raptors deep striking or relying on the turn one night fighting shroud to move forward?

Plasma guns are very versatile and metla bombs incase they get close enough to a tank.
Large units of bikers are with the sorcerer and the chaos lord to make them more dangerous in combat
Plasma is extremely versatile, makes the chosen dangerous to several things like light vehicles, terminators and mc at a safer range than melta
The sorcerer and the and the lord are with the bikes and the raptor lord is with the warp talons. I'm not sure whether to deep strike them or not!
What are people's opinions on the night lord artifacts? are the claws of the black hunt worth taking?

Plasma Guns with the Melta Bombs make little sense on a non-Relentless platform. If you genuinely believe they'll be next to a tank, why not stick with Melta Guns on those guys?

Agreed. That is kinda the point of raptors. Well one of them. Also, if you dont plan to deep strike/assault - melta then there is little point to taking a raptor talon. Also, im not sure a warband is a good choice for NL. Your game plan revolves around the raptor talon and the hi-jinks it brings. A good NL list, in my mind, is going to abuse the fact that the raptor talon is a core formation for them. So two talons where other legions could only fit one. Obsec is great but the NL does not lend themselves to it. You want lots of DSing raptors with melta and charecter support. Also, im not sure one sorc is a good idea. All it takes is a roll of one on your warp charges to get stuffed on the psychic phase leaving you as a two wound wanna-be chaos lord, but I guess its a decent idea for the bonus to deny a sorc gets but I would leave him at ml1 and stick him in a cheap bunker and strip his options/upgrades. 170+ points for a deny bonus is not a good time. Also if you must keep the warband, ditch the havoc for a hel brute. Its cheaper, more flexible and the weapons that can kill it can and will kill your havocs easier. In the end, the purpose for the legions is flavor and are built around that flavor. NIghtlords deepstrike and fear. Abuse both of those and hope you dont run into many fearless/ atsknf targets.

Hmmm it's definitely a good point! it would free up 10 additional points in the list as well. I'll have a think about that! Automatically Appended Next Post:

I gotta disagree with you on a few points here, although a lot of what you said made sense.
My game plan revolves around the bikes not the raptor talon. The raptor talon is a there to mitigate and destroy selected squads and if possible slay the warlord. I agree with you though deep striking seems the way to go!
The sorcerer is in a squad of 6 other bikes, I'm thinking he could buff the squad or contribute to shooting attacks or maybe even some heretech, geomortis or ectomancy!
And objective secured havocs popping las cannon shots off while their objective secured rhino wanders off to take another (or draw fire) seems to bring a slight diversity to the list in case I get caught in an objective hunt! another thing the sorceror could help with in the likes of geomortis or ectomancy!
Saying that you should post a list of what you described there, I'd love to take a look!

I have to say that in my opinion Havocs are probably one of the best options for night lords, the stealth allows that to hide in a far back ruin with a nice 3+ or even 2+ on first turn cover save, using their overly large range that havocs have to demolish people from afar with little response back from the enemy. They also can dish out waaaayyyy more damage than a helbrute.
The bikers with their 3+ jink due to stealth also benefit very well from the night lords special rules, a warband is in my opinion one of the best things in the Nightlords arsenal.

I agree completely, Between the Rhino and stealth their survivablity well exceeds that of a hellbrute! Yeah they are a major threat to anything if kitted out correctly as well! relentless rapid fire bolters and meltas before a hammer of wrath charge can be devastating!

Well that could count as any of the power weapons in my opinion (apart from a power maul). but easily a power axe, sword or lance!

I agree thar the chaos warband is probably your best bet as a core choice for the murder talon.
Sadly the raptor talon isn't as good as it should be for the Night Lords, we didn't get any reserve manipulation rule or artifact without that and to a second extent something to reduce the scattering out of position makes the raptor talon as ok for the Night Lords as it is for the rest of the Legions. If you want to play raptor talon you prpbably should go black Legion. With their formation you get to roll for deepstrike since turn one which makes the formation a lot better and if you decide to make the jump pack Lord in there your warlord you deepstrike for sure on turn 1 and get to charge with a marked raptor unit. Can't get better than that.
Back the the NL thou, bikes are the unit which get the most benefits for +3 points over a raptor you get +1T, 3+ jink, how 100% of the time and can turbo boost instead of rolling for run. So... Yeah go with the warband.
I've just played 1 game with the new rules and I went all fluffy with raptors instead of bikes which did pretty good but bikes would've done a lot better. I ran a chaos warband, DP and 2 spawns. It was a 1,500 game.
What did I see pretty good?
Claws of the Black Hunt are totally worth it on a Chaos Lord. Not so much on a Dp IMHO rending is redundant and the storm plate is godly on DP s so... Yah take these on a biked Lord I did on my jump pack Lord and it decimated troops with them.
Storm Plate is your go for a DP and if you are taking a DP we all know you either go all the way in points with him or don't take it at all so... Tzeentch winged DP with stormplate gives you a 2+ rerollable armor save and a 2+ rerollable jink with a 5++ make it a sorc and roll on your favorite discipline, i'd say tzeentch if you plan of just being a buff/shooting platform with him or a buff heavy discipline like biomancy or ectomancy for buffing him while in combat.
The box daemonicus artifact seems like a good choice if you play vs reserve heavy or non fearless/atsknf armies.

Rending is. But since you brought it up STR 7 isn't worth it, it isn't enough to instakill MEQ and just as with STR 6 you wound most of the models in 2+ it might help for av13 walkers but in those cases smash will be your best bet anyway. At the end of the day if you are going to give the DP an artefact the stormplate will be your best bet. Cheaper than the vanilla power armour upgrade and it gives you far more benefits.

Let's be honest the black mace is still better on a prince, but nothing is going to beat the storm bolt armour. It's sad that a prince can't have two artifacts!
