What sort of fortifications are okay to bring in a casual game? I'm obviously not bringing an aquila strongpoint or a primus redoubt, but was curious what the average player thinks is okay to bring. Do you guys bring plasma obliterators, fortresses of redemption? Am I being annoying if I bring a skyshield landing pad or void shields?
I'm likely just using an ADL and some tank traps (so a knight doesn't beat up me up or dreadnoughts roll through my artillery), maybe tangle wire for laughs, but wanted to see what's considered appropriate at your own personal gaming clubs. In general there's a very strong stigma against fortifications at my store, but it's mainly because our WAAC eldar player uses them a lot. The only things I've really seen are skyshields, which, while annoying (an invuln instead of cover?) can be dealt with or ignored.
I really hope no one thinks an ADL or tank traps are unsportsmanlike.

Fortifications are sorta like FW. There are a few broken ones that get abused that give a bad name for the rest. Most are fine, but some can be exploited for shenanigans. Which can be said about a number of normal units/codexes as well.
In previous editions the rules were a mess. They are a little better now. People were also often unfamiliar with them, so didn’t know how to deal. A friend of mine used to use a Fortress of Redemption. It was nasty. But once you learned about it, no worse to deal with then a Land Raider. Easier in some cases. And considering the points it took not only to add to the list, but to man, it was a huge immobile chunk of an army. But when the krackstom missiles were pouring down, sometimes it was hard to think objectively.
ADLs are fairly benign. I can’t see anyone having a major problem with them. There might be some spillover hate from VSGs and Skyshields that splashes on them, but as long as you are not a tool, you should be fine.

For the cost of an ADL, you could get the AV14, 20-man WoM bunker. AV14 is more than most casual armies can easily handle, and the cost is 1/5 of a LR for the same armour.
So, being TFG with fortifications is easy.
But, going the other way, is the WoM emplacement. It fits 3x 40mm bases and a few 25mm between them. It gives the same cover saves as an ADL, Stubborn to models in it, and Overwatch re-rolls for HW in it. It's a few points cheaper than the ADL, but less adaptable

I'm borrowing the guy's baneblade, so it'll be an infantry blob and then that behind them.

Depends on the scenario really. If it's a clash of two recon forces stumbling into each other, fortifications wouldn't make much sense. If your side has had time to dig in, then sure.

Might not make you the most popular person ever, but it's also not the most ludicrous thing to do either. I wouldn't be mad.

I will be up against 2 knights, so I'm not overly worried about being unpopular.

2 Knights? Not exactly a casual game in my eyes then, lol. Go for it!

We figured it'd be a fair balance since I get a baneblade. I'll also have 2 manticores and a ton melta. So I guess not casual exactly, but we'll be treating it as friendly. This'll be my first time playing with a baneblade, although I kind of wish it was a hellhammer or a shadowsword.

Bring a Macrocannon and laugh as your AV 15 bunker puts out two SD pieplates a turn.

Two knights are completely casual. Their sides are AV 12. You can't take out AV 12 vehicles with your casual list? They've also got little AP 2 firepower.

AV 12... with a solid Invul save. Lulz... no AP2 Firepower, but D-Close Combat Weapons and Stomps... And how many people are rocking 2+ saves, anyhow? And the best ones have 12 tries to score a Rending hit, plus whatever else they have.
More than one Knight at 1500 pts or less is pushing past the casual. I don't think a Casual, TAC list can normally handle 2+ Knights at that level.
And your Baneblade is vastly inferior to a Knight, much less two. Good luck!

Its a huge point sink. I would totally be fine with you having 1/4 - 1/5th less points to spend on actual models. However, pls do not be that guy who blocks off the only entrance of the building with the table edge and claim that I can't get in the building... Automatically Appended Next Post: Na you don't need that thing. Its huge it dwarfs the fortress of redemption, and way too expensive to buy and to field in most games. It would be a shelf sitter if it could fit on your shelf. What you need is the humble tank trap, and lots of them since they are impassable terrain for knights. Just go full scale WOI on him. It looks great, and is the only sensible thing to do in a real world battle vs knights. They cost 15pts per 6" strip of them, they do not have to touch each other but do have to be wholly within 6" of the fortification they come with and you can buy up to 6 of those strips per most fortifications including the aegis defense line.

Sounds like a fun, super casual game. Fortifications are no more or less "triggering" (for lack of a better word, I didn't have a good one) than 2 knights apparently.

anyone who has gone out of their way to buy and build a legit GW model can use it in any game, i usually ask opponents to tell me if theyre bringing knights or GMCs but fortifications you must be joking.

Some fortifications can be quite messy.
The WoM fortifications is a pair of interceptor/skyfire quad-lascannon with automated firing, on a AV14 building, for 200 points. It is effectively a stationary Land Raider with a big hatch.
Not too nasty, but could be trouble for some people.

I have faced that one a few times and it is quite bad actually.
It only has 2 heavy 2 twin linked S9 ap2 Bs2 vs flyers and Bs1 vs all ground targets shots, is immobile and cost the same as a land raider.

Forts are as much a part of 40k as any GW codex and forgeworld. Meaning it is 100% legal. However, in answer to the question on ethics of sportsmanship. I do not see a problem with forts in a meta that allows scatter bike spam, wraith knights, Riptide wings and Imperial Knights.

MCs have all kinds of saves, but give a single type of vehicle a directional save and everyone loses their minds. IKs are weak for what you pay for them, and even worse when compared to GMCs of the same cost. Or even cheaper.

For me it's all a matter of intent. I don't have any issue with an opponent bringing whatever fortification they have access to so long as it's in good spirits.
