Subject: Question on detachments.

I find detachments incredibly confusing.
I want to run a Thousands Son War Cabal without a Grand Coven. Can I do this? Is a formation a detachment or does my War Cabal need to be part of the Grand Coven? Can I put a War Cabal in a CAD?

1. Detachments are simply a way to organize armies. The most basic is the Combined Arms Detachment (1-2 HQ, 2-6 Troops, 0-3 Elite, etc).
2. Formations are simply detachments that require specific units to use.
3. Some detachments are made up of multiple formations, and unit choices.
4. Units can only belong to a single detachment (however, there are some exceptions, see 3 above).
5. As long as the formation in question has its own datasheet, it can be used as a stand alone formation.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

As a further answer, no, you cannot put a War Cabal in a CAD. Each is its own detachment and no unit can be part of more than one detachment at a time.
This gets a bit more complex with something like a decurion, but in that case you'll have a specific override in the codex/supplement saying the detachment is made up of multiple detachments.
Any detachment with a datasheet in your codex/supplement can be fielded completely on its own.

So just to be crystal clear, I can therefore run a War Cabal without a Grand Coven (which is one of those detachments that are special condition, upon reading the page)?
