Tied and gagged in the back of your car

So I ended up quitting 40k shortly after the drop of 6th edition, due to a combination of dissatisfaction with the new rules and the implosion of the old game group. But some recent, unrelated excursions to the local FLGS and a revived (and hopefully not near as toxic) gaming population has sort of gotten a few sparks going, and I'm tempted to get back and try a few games. While the new edition definitely hasn't addressed all of my woes (and might just end up creating a few new ones), it can't be worse than 6th. Right?.

Back in the good old days, the last forces I used to run were a Draigowing Paladin army and mech-vet Guard. I'd be looking to combine the two into a single force on a larger scale (and maybe even actually get around to painting my Krieg this time...), however some light browsing has pointed out that Guard are bad and that terminators in general are absolute garbage. While I'm not unfamiliar with playing weaker armies (I started out with the old Daemonhunter's codex right at the very beginning of 5th edition, for what that's worth), I'm no fan of nigh unwinnable matchups either, and I'd at least like to make things workable. Moreover, I absolutely refuse to field a Nemesis Babycarrier, have the firm belief that flyers should never have existed on the 40k tabletop, and even PAGK rub me the wrong way; which needless to say, complicates things a bit.

So my greater goal would be to somehow make a Krieg shocktrooper force with GKT (would go Paladins, but it looks like I can't get those as troops anymore...) support, while sticking mostly to an older and more restricted class of options. I'd look to compose my guard primarily of mechanized scions and veterans, with artillery and tank support. Any suggestions towards making that work, advice in a direction to work in, or even just a rundown of the current meta as it stands? I've seen it said that 8th edition will be coming at some point this year, which might serve to help my situation, but I'll not put too much faith in that.

That said, I'll likely be starting (and sticking for a while) with a small Guard killteam force, once again focusing around a unit or two of scions. I'd be thinking of something along the lines of:

Tempestus Scions (5 man) - Hot-Shot Volley Gun (2)
Tempestus Scions (5 man) - Plasma Gun (2)

And I'm wondering if anyone's had much success along similar lines.
